President's Column
By Andrew Gavens

Andy web

The recent events in Israel have had me very concerned.  I do not understand how Israel can be seen in a negative light when it has shown so much restraint, is only defending itself, and is doing its utmost to minimize casualties.  One of the significant differences I have noticed between Israel, being a Jewish State, and the terrorists is Israel's respect for life. This made me question exactly what aspect of Judaism leads us to value life so strongly.  There are certainly passages in the Torah

about war, the ordered annihilation of other tribes, and how many of our martyrs chose death rather than convert or desecrate our religion.  Yet to modern Jews it does not matter whether Jew or not, we still value life.  Not one of us wants to see a civilian in Gaza injured, never mind killed.  "Thou shall not murder" is only a starting point.  One aspect of kashrut is to sanctify the life of the animals we eat.  There is certainly a focus on improving this world rather than focusing on what comes after life.  Is it the continued reminder that we were once slaves in Egypt?  I wish I had a better answer.  (As I write this, the Rabbi is on vacation or I would be in his office.)

It is obvious that I am not close to being an expert on this topic.  I would be interested in knowing if you have other more knowledgeable explanations why as Jews we value life so highly.  The bottom line is that we can be proud of both the actions and the means that Israel has taken to protect itself.

Rabbi's Column

By Rabbi Lichtenfeld

ted

I do not need to tell you how difficult a time this has been for Israel and for we who feel linked to it.  Hamas rockets are now able to reach all over the country, and Israelis in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem now know what it is like to have to race into shelters within less than a minute of hearing the sirens.  I urge all of us to support Israel's war of self-defense, as well as pray for the soldiers of Tzahal and citizens of Israel in harm's way.  I believe it is incumbent on us as well to pray for the Gaza civilians who have been killed and injured during the course of this latest conflict.  For all concerned, we hope that a lasting peace and security can soon be established.

Operation Tzuk Eitan  ("Protective Edge") comes at a season particularly fraught for Jews.  The 3 weeks between the fasts of the 17th of Tammuz and Tisha b'Av are known as bein ha-metzarim, "between the straits," and commemorate the final events that led to the destruction of both Temples.  The question is sometimes asked what our relationship to this period should be, as Jews who now enjoy a sovereignty in our own land unknown to our people only a few generations ago.  The Rabbis state (Talmud, Rosh Hashanah 18a):

'What is the meaning of the verse [in Zechariah], Thus had said the Lord of Hosts: The fast of the fourth month and the fast of the fifth and the fast of the seventh and the fast of the tenth shall be to the house of Judah joy and gladness?  The prophet calls these days both days of fasting and days of joy, signifying that when there is peace they shall be for joy and gladness, but if there is not peace they shall be fast days'! - R. Papa replied: What it means is this: When there is peace they shall be for joy and gladness; if there is persecution, they shall be fast days; if there is no persecution but yet not peace, then those who desire may fast and those who desire need not fast.3 If that is the case, the ninth of Av also [should be optional]? - R. Papa replied: The ninth of Av is in a different category, because several misfortunes happened on it....

I regard the fast of the 17th of  Tammuz ("the fast of the fourth month") as optional, for I believe our situation is closest to "no persecution but not yet peace."  That is, Jews are no longer powerless, for we have our own land and - when needed - our own army.  However, current events make clear that we are still far from the time of messianic shalom.  That is why I do not agree with those modern Jews who feel the modern State of Israel has made Tisha b'Av ("the fast of the fifth [month]" irrelevant.  As we observe the ninth of Av during this latest crisis in Eretz Yisrael, let us pray for the day when all our days of mourning can truly be turned into days of joy and gladness.

Programming Committee Announces 2014 Stephen Berk Lecture Series

 By Stephen Schmidt

The Programming Committee is proud to announce a series of six fascinating lectures with Dr. Stephen Berk, Scholar-in-Residence at Congregation Agudat Achim for over 30 years.  Come join us on Monday evenings from September 8 until October 20 (no lecture on October 13) for Dr. Berk's newest lecture series The Great War and the Jews.

All lectures will be held from 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm and are open to the public. The complete series costs $45 and must be purchased before the end of the second class. You can also register, print your tickets, pay by check, and pay online by using this link. Single lectures are $10 and can be purchased at the door. To view, print, and see the brochure click here.

The lectures are as follows:

 I.  (September 8)  The Lights Go Out: August 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of World War 1. The war changed everything. It is the seminal event of the 20th century. The accession to power of Lenin, and the Communists in Russia, the creation of a Fascist Italy by Mussolini, and the emergence of Nazi Germany can all be traced to the Great War. The beginnings of decolonization and major social and economic changes also have their origins in the war.

II.  (September 15)  Stalemate: The Schlieffen Plan goes awry. The French hold at the Marne, and the Germans have a great victory in the East. The Germans, the French and the British try to outflank each other. The results are a 400 mile line of trenches, and the horrors of trench warfare ensue.

III.  (September 22)  The Yanks Are Coming: 1916 was the time of two of the greatest battles in the history of warfare: Verdun, and the Somme. The Germans rolled the dice at Jutland and made very serious diplomatic mistakes such as unrestricted submarine warfare. An angry American president moves the United States to a declaration of war

IV. (September 29)  Changing Jewish Destinies:  The war was a catastrophe for everyone involved, but a case can be made that the Jews of Eastern Europe suffered more than anyone else, with the possible exception of the Armenians. At the same time the seeds of a future Jewish state were planted. French and British duplicity would also have dramatic consequences.

 V. (October 6)  With Our Backs to the Wall:  Ludendorff set "Der Tag" for March 21, 1918. He told the Kaiser that Germany had to win the war before the Americans arrived. Sir Douglas Haig made the famous statement urging British soldiers to fight to the death. The Allies hold and go over to the offensive. At the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month the Great War was over.

VI.  (October 20)  Versailles and the Seeds of a New War:  The social and economic consequences of the war were tremendous. The peoples and governments of Britain and France rejected all calls for a lenient peace treaty with Germany. At Versailles they made the possibility of a new war very likely. It was the greatest political blunder in modern history. The repercussions of Versailles resonate down to the present day.

Religious School News

By Jack Mintzer

The Religious School and the School Board are pleased to announce that opening day has been set for September 7. School will be open from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and the schedule includes:  an open house, selection of electives and day of the week to attend, an opportunity to meet the teachers, and a nosh. All are welcome to attend. Registration forms, and other information will be sent out by e-mail around the second week in August.

There are a lot of exciting plans in the works for this year. I have been in touch with Flo Miller from Congregation Beth Shalom in Clifton Park and, like last year, we will be planning two joint events. As many of you know these were quite successful! There will also be some exciting changes coming to the High School that should spark the interest of our students.

The flexible scheduling concept that we started last year allows our students to participate in secular activities while still benefiting from a full and complete religious school experience. The differentiated learning style centers that we used during the week were also a big hit with students in grades 3-7. Both of these concepts will be continued this year.

Enjoy the month of August, as September is right around the corner! As always, if you have any questions, please contact Jack Mintzer at aguprinc@nycap.rr.com

Carrot Festival Committee Announces Headliner Band

By Hillary Fink

We are excited to announce that Captain Squeeze and the Zydeco Moshers (CSZM) will be performing a special afternoon concert at this year's Carrot Festival, which is on Sunday, September 14.  "They mix pop tunes, zydeco standards, and original material into a musical gumbo sure to feed anyone's appetite," according to their website www.captainsqueeze.com.  This will be a special concert for everyone, since it will be one of their final performances in our area.  After 18 years of touring the Northeast, Captain Squeeze is relocating to New Orleans in the fall.

Their website lists many venues where they have played, including First Night in Albany and Saratoga Springs, the Empire State Plaza Fourth of July Festival, the US Open Tennis Tournament in Queens, NY, and lots more!  They have also opened for:  The Neville Brothers, Buckwheat Zydeco, The Spin Doctors, Terrance Simien, C. J. Chenier, Steve Riley, Chris Ardoin and Geno Delophose.

Please come join the fun!  The other acts in our fabulous entertainment lineup will be listed in the September e-Newsletter.  Trust us - you will want to spend the whole day at the Carrot Festival!

Board of Trustees Approves Education Endowment Grant Recommendations for 2014-15

By Gary Adelson

Each year the Education Endowment Committee [EEC] recommends grants to Agudat Achim (AA) committees for projects they submit for consideration. The AA constitution provides for up to 1% of the Education Endowment Fund's assets be used for this purpose. Based on current undesignated assets, this coming year we will have $12,800 available to support approved projects.

The Board approved the following proposals at its June meeting totaling $8300:

  • USY/Kadima support for attendance at regional conferences - $3900
  • Programming Committee film rentals for 4 movies - $2400
  • Tikkun Olum Social Action Ethical Fair Trade food - $300
  • Judaica Committee High Holiday Ritual repair/replacement - $1600 (with additional support from the Israel Experience Fund and the synagogue budget)

Any money not used during the year will remain in the Education Endowment Fund's investments.  The EEC will have another $4500 available throughout the year for other projects that may be submitted for consideration.

The undesignated funds within the Education Endowment Funds now total just over $1,280.000 and were raised over the years through numerous contributions from members of the congregation in their estates or as gifts during their lives. The synagogue Investment Committee, chaired by Ken Carpenter, has been instrumental in the ongoing growth of our investments. Many members of the congregation have made a pledge to include the Education Endowment Fund in their estate by becoming members of AKIVA. The list of members is available from the office and is published during major holy days.

The Education Endowment Funds also include a number of funds dedicated to a specific purpose by the donor. These currently total over $230,000 and include such funds as the Prager Music Fund, Phillip Stark Visual Arts Fund, the Dorothy Golub Spira Israel Experience Fund, the Alan Wesheimer Fund, and the Youth Scholarship Fund.

In addition to the grants approved by the Board of Trustees, the Education Endowment Fund provides up to 5% of its assets annually to support the synagogue religious school and other needs of the congregation [e.g., Bar/Bat Mitzvah training].

The EEC extends their heartfelt thanks to the congregation for their support and encouragement over the years.

Barrie Handelman, Mark Handelman, Eileen Handelman, Ron Scharf, Roberta Steiner, Sam Sylvetsky, Gary Adelson (Chair).
