President's Column
By Mery Gross
February brought terrific programming and many successes. The Women's Network Rosh Hodesh program with seven women rabbis was a sensation. Purim was a fun-filled celebration with great chanting, two Purim shpiels, food, raffles, animal balloons, and more. The Shalach Manot fundraising project was a hit, delivering financial results while touching the hearts of congregants with the distribution of hamentashen and copies of the history of our 120-year-old congregation.
As committee chairs delved into their work to bring these accomplishments, other congregants emerged, willing to chair committees and help address other needs at Agudat Achim. Highlighted below are the backgrounds of four congregants who have stepped up to the plate: Judge Bruce S. Trachtenberg, Ken Carpenter, Deborah Friedson, and Naomi Golovin.
Judge Bruce S. Trachtenberg has agreed to serve as chair of our Security Committee, to develop a comprehensive safety plan for our congregation. He has hit the ground running and is already working with Director of Education and Programming Jack Mintzer and Fire District One Chief Dale Ligenfelter to review our school emergency procedures.
Bruce has served on the Security Committee at Agudat Achim for many years, which has focused mainly on security around the High Holy Days. He has attended a number of FBI and Homeland Security meetings. On January 30, Bruce attended a special safety and security preparedness meeting at the Jewish Federation, presented by the Secure Community Network (SCN), the national homeland security initiative of the Jewish Federations of North America and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish organizations. At the meeting, there were representatives of local law enforcement agencies, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and Homeland Security.
Bruce has been a member of our congregation since 1979. He has served on the Boards of the Schenectady Jewish Community Center and Agudat Achim, and has been president of Men's Club. He is fully certified to work in our kosher kitchen, where he has been the primary cook preparing meals for Men's Club for over 25 years, as well as for other events. In addition, Bruce has been our liaison to and Board member of the V'aad Hakashruth for over a decade.
For eight years Bruce was Niskayuna Town Justice. A practicing attorney for over three decades, Bruce serves as an assistant Conflict Defender three days per week, representing the indigent in Family Court and Niskayuna Town Court. He maintains a law practice concentrating on litigation, matrimonial, and family law.
Ken Carpenter is the new chair of our Investment Committee, replacing long-term leader Sam Lefkowitz. Ken has a Bachelor's Degree from RPI in Management Science, a Master's Degree from the University at Albany in Accounting, a Master's Degree from University of Southern California in Public Administration, and did post graduate work in strategic planning and system dynamics at SUNY Albany.
Most of Ken's work was with the State of New York as a researcher, then as manager of federal grant programs, before his first retirement. After a number of years as accountant at the Schenectady Jewish Community Center, he returned to his research background with the Research Foundation of SUNY as a Research Scientist conducting behavior studies. Ken plans to leave that position in May and finally retire for real.
He has served as an officer and treasurer of many social and not for profit groups, including Congregation Agudat Achim. Currently, he is on the Board of the Niskayuna Consumer Cooperative. Ken and his wife Ellen, a former school board and Women's Network president, have two adult children, each with a baby boy born in 2012.
Deborah Friedson is the chair of Ritual Objects, a newly created position. Deborah is a watercolor artist, author, speaker, and a retired visual arts educator, who is enthusiastic about contributing to our congregation.
Deborah will be working closely with the Ritual Committee. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Wagner College in Staten Island, NY, and attended graduate school at Syracuse University. Her current artwork is primarily represented by Symmetry Gallery in Saratoga Springs, NY. Many of her original paintings are installed in various locations across the country, including: The National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in Bethesda Maryland, Ophelia's Place in Syracuse, NY, Albany Medical Center's Melody Center in Albany, NY, and at our congregation. For more information on her accomplishments, visit her website at www.elephantheart.net.
New member Naomi Golovin will be replacing Lori Stein as librarian. Naomi has been a librarian for 32 years. She has worked in academic, state, law, school, and special libraries. Her most recent job was librarian at the Bureau of Jewish Education in Indianapolis. Naomi has volunteered at and set up libraries at the synagogues where she belonged in Atlanta and Indianapolis. Naomi and her husband Neal have four children, Seth, Kevin, Randy and Hannah. They are the proud owners of two cats who are enjoying the house they purchased in Schenectady. Naomi grew up in Chappaqua, NY, and is pleased to have returned to her home state. We are delighted to welcome Bruce, Ken, Debbie, and Naomi to the positions listed above. Our gratitude goes to Sam and Lori for their significant contributions to our congregation. Fortunately, Sam will continue as member of the Investment Committee. Lori has accepted a full-time job, and we wish her the best of luck. _______________________________________________________

Rabbi's Column
By Rabbi Ted

Pesach -- particularly the Seder nights -- has always been, along with Thanksgiving, my favorite holiday. That is not only because, apparently, I like to eat, but because of the drama of the story we recount and the powerful feeling that I am now joined to Jews throughout throughout the world, who even now as I do are contemplating why this night is different from all the other nights of the year. In the New American Haggadah of Jonathan Safran Foer, Rebecca N. Goldstein (the "Library" commentary) writes regarding Kiddush:
"Time rushes on, impassive and unmarked. It's we who domesticate the flux, parceling it out into countable units so that we can situate ourselves within it: I am young and live in expectation, I am old and nearing the end of the my days. Differentiation creates order, creates duration, creates the sense of our lives. A religious calendar imposes further divisions on time, separating out hours to be regarded as so significant as to achieve holiness. . . . From the beginning to the end of the seder there is a multiplicity of stages, with procedural instructions overlaid all along the way.... And if there is a way toward sanctification in all of this, if such an ideal is even possible, then it lies somewhere in the divisions, parting time as Moses parted the sea, effecting a separation where the extraordinary can make itself felt."
As we celebrate the Sedarim, may we see this setting aside of sacred time as a call to carve holiness out of the mundane more often, and to use Shabbat, Kashrut, and other mitzvot as a tool for doing so. Just as God separated us from bondage through wonders and miracles, so should we make other "separations where the extraordinary can make itself felt," cultivating a sense of (in Heschel's phrase) "radical amazement," at the frequent beauty of our world and the privilege we have been given to be members of the House of Israel.
Hag Kasher vSameah. Rabbi Miriam and our children join me in wishing you a sweet and kosher Pesach.

Funday Sunday is Coming
By Hillary Fink
On Sunday, March 17 from 12:15 until 3 p.m, please join us at our first ever Funday Sunday. As a new, FUN way to raise FUNDS for our synagogue, the afternoon will feature lunch and activities for the entire family!
Our featured entertainment will be the Mop and Bucket Company (the Capital District's premiere improvisational theater company), which will "perform" two sets. If you are not familiar with who makes up this group, please check out their website here http://mopco.org/. As they say, they "don't do stand-up comedy. But they do stand up, sit down, sing, dance, sit, roll over, you name it!" Whether you decide to participate in or watch their performances, I guarantee that you will have fun! Many members of Women's Network have seen them before, as they have been our entertainment at Paid-Up Membership programs in the past.
Your ticket price will also include: a pasta lunch, one complimentary adult beverage, jazz by Mitch Kessler and Friends, games for adults and children, crafts, movies and ice cream sundaes. Babysitting will be available for children under three years old.
When you arrive at 12:15 p.m., right after Religious School (hint,

hint), you will be treated to a pasta lunch and music in the social hall. The Mop and Bucket Company will perform its first set at 1 p.m. Please don't be nervous! Participation is only encouraged and is appropriate for ALL ages. The music will continue at 1:30 p.m., and the "breakout rooms" will open. In the Game Room (or small social hall) you will find Mah Jongg, card games, and more for the adults. In the Fun Room (or Michael Handelman Room) children can play games and do arts and crafts. If you aren't interested in crafts or games, then please come relax in the Movie Theater (or chapel). The second set of Mop and Bucket Company will begin at 2 p.m., while the "breakout rooms" remain open, and the afternoon will end with "make your own sundaes."
Our fabulous committee has been hard at work designing this program so it is appropriate for all ages! It is also open to the entire community, so please bring your family and friends! If you have any questions, please contact me at 458-2756 or hbean5891@aol.com.
Ticket prices include food and entertainment: BY MARCH 10: $12/adult $6/child $36/family cap (the way we price the dinners) AFTER MARCH 10: $18/adult $9/child $45/family cap

By Hillary Fink and Este Sylvetsky
Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's Mishloach Manot project! Whether you helped bake more than 6000 hamantashen in January, you sent greetings to family and friends, you helped assemble more than 450 packages, or you helped deliver them, your support is greatly appreciated.
All of our college students as well as several home bound non- members received packages, as one of the traditions of Women's Network. In addition, Gary, Jack, and our office staff received a package. Thanks to the generosity of: Randy & Rob Fox, Mery & Dan Gross and the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee, The Lichtenfeld Family, The Mayers, Eric & Gilah Moses and Family, Hildy, Herb, Jacob and Andi Reich, Alice Rubenfeld, Martin (Mendel) Siegel, The Sharfstein / Shiang Family and Roberta & Don Steiner, every congregant received a package!
We would like your feedback so we can make this project even bigger and better for next year! Please click here and complete the very brief survey. Thank you again for your support!

Caring for Our Ritual Objects By Deborah Friedson Many of our beloved ritual artifacts have become worn and threadbare. Like our aging building, we must attend to our treasured ritual objects.
Our Torah covers, small Torah mantle, Torah ties, bimah covers for Shabbat and holidays, and curtains or screens for our Holy Arks are being inspected and assessed to determine their condition. We have begun to research the repair and/or replacement of our precious ritual objects. As this work progresses, we will keep you informed. In the meantime, if you have an upcoming simcha and are interested in exploring the donation of a ritual object in celebration of your special occasion, please contact me (Deborah Friedson) at 518-346-1449 or elephantheart@gmail.com. I will be happy to discuss all the details of my work.

Women's Network
By Judy Ben-Ami
Since the last e-newsletter, we had two big programs that featured women in Judaism in very different ways. However, both programs were also similar due to the fact that the participants who attended were from different synagogues, giving us a chance to meet and get to know each other better. First, there was a joint program with the other three sisterhoods of Schenectady and Clifton Park, held at the Schenectady Jewish Community Center. Wendy Rabinowitz, from Pittsfield, Massachussetts, who has an exhibit called: "Shalom: Weaving Threads of Peace" at the JCC, talked about herself as a Jewish woman artist. Wendy also explained the meaning of her beautiful art, which is based on weaving and mixed-media assemblages. After Wendy's presentation, attendees participated in a healing circle session that was both comforting and bonding. The Second program was a Rosh Hodesh Celebration: "Women's Voices in Prayer, Worship and Ritual." We welcomed the month of Adar and began the day with a minyan. Seven women rabbis and other guests participated. Minyan was followed by breakfast, and then a panel discussion led by our guests: Rabbis Rose Durbin (Glens Falls), Debora Gordon (Berith Shalom, Troy), Nomi Manon (SUNY Albany Hillel), Linda Motzkin (Temple Sinai, Saratoga), Catherine Nemiroff (Delmar), Anna Sugarman (Synagogue Without Walls, Or Chadash) and our own Miriam Midlarsky-Lichtenfeld, who served as moderator of the discussion. We then divided into small groups to study with the rabbis and enjoyed a delicious lunch. I would like to give many thanks to Mishka Luft, Sharon Strosberg, Miriam Midlarsky-Lichtenfeld, Ruth Fraster, Roberta Steiner, Lynn Finkel, Anita Merims, Sylvia Winer and Jack Mintzer because without their help and hard work, this program would not have been as successful as it was. I would also like to send a big thank-you to Cheryl Ratner for having the gift shop open before and after hours for our guests' pleasure. Following are a few examples of the feedback that we received: - First time I've ever done anything like this I look forward to more like it.
- Very informative and interesting to hear different points of view.
- The panel was great.
- Very impressive to hear the depth of knowledge...loved the diversity in the room, the strength of everyone's knowledge.
- I liked seeing our sisters together.
Was above my expectations - exciting program. Thank you for a wonderful program. - I liked having a program that brought women from all over the area together.

Renovation of Ladies Bathroom/Lounge
By Sylvia Winer
The ladies restroom and lounge have officially been renovated with major thanks going to Nancy Cornell for her expertise in the designing and coordination of the work. New counters, a handicap-accessible cubicle and new trimmings have been installed in the restroom, along with a fresh coat of paint and modern trimmings. Hill and Marks generously donated the modern soap and towel dispensers. The lounge has a new counter, carpet, window covering, mirror and furniture. The latest acquisition is an end table as a gift from Cohen Furniture.
The project was funded primarily by Women's Network, with additional moneys coming from the 110th Anniversary Fund and the Health and Accessibility Fund.
If you have not already done so, please take a look! I am sure that any lady will check to make sure "the coast is clear" if you are a man who wants to see what has been done.
We are still in need of pictures to be hung in the cubicles and a small lamp and flower arrangement for the table. If you are able to make a donation of any of these items, please either leave them in the office or e-mail me at sylndherb@gmail.com if you have any questions.

BIBLICAL GARDEN UPDATE
By Josie Kivort
"The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing is come" Song of Songs 2:12
Spring is only a few weeks away! Soon the bulbs, planted in the fall in the Biblical Garden, will be poking through the hardened ground, preparing to burst forth with color. New growth will appear on the shrubs, such as the Mt. Laurels, and perhaps they will bloom for the first time.
The Biblical Garden committee looks forward to resuming its work as the weather improves. Our plans include purchasing a bench, a fig tree, a flowering almond, grasses to represent the wheat and barley mentioned in the Bible, and replenishing the herb garden.
We offer thanks to those of you who have made contributions to the Biblical Garden Fund over the winter months and encourage you all to continue to do so when you wish to honor or remember someone special.

Men's Club Breakfast to Feature Richard Ball
By Paul Westheimer
On Sunday, March 10, Richard Ball will be speaking at the Men's Club Breakfast about issues of 21st century farming, including solar power and efficient irrigation methods. He is an active farmer and owner of Schoharie Valley Farms, best known at Agudat Achim for his major role in the success of the Carrot Festival. The farm consists of 200 acres and produces a wide range of vegetable crops, small fruits, and greenhouse crops. The farm serves both retail customers, through the farm market known as The Carrot Barn, as well as wholesale customers, shipping to brokers and restaurants in the Albany Capital District and New York City. Richard, his wife Shirley, and his three children are all actively engaged in the farm with a growing number of potential future farmers amongst the grandchildren.
In addition to that role, there is much of interest that he can present at the breakfast. He is deeply involved in statewide and national agricultural organizations, including being on the Board of Directors of the New York State Vegetable Growers Association, Schoharie County Farm Bureau, and New York State Farm Bureau. He is co-chair of New York Farm Bureau's labor committee and past chair of the American Farm Bureau labor advisory committee. He represents Schoharie County on the Governor's Mohawk Valley Regional Economic Development Council, is president of the Schoharie Valley Association and, most recently, a board member of Schoharie Recovery - an organization formed in response to the flooding from Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee.
With the help of a grant, he developed a solar project to supply a major portion of the electricity for the refrigeration needs, greenhouses and the washing and packaging of the produce.
His farm is also one of the farms working in partnership with Tanya Field's community in the South Bronx to supply vegetables each week through the Corbin Hill Road Farm Shares. Richard told the story of how the strong relationship formed between the farming community of Schoharie County and their urban partners in the South Bronx supported his farm and the community in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.
