President's Column
By Mery Gross

Mery The High Holy Days have passed, and so have Shemini Atzeret, Simchat Torah, and Sukkot.

Many of you attended the High Holy Days, but few witnessed the beautiful ceremony that was held at our congregation on Simchat Torah, where Sue Ann Grosberg, Religious School teacher for 35 years, and Sam Lefkowitz, Investment Committee chair for 13 years, were honored as the bride and groom of the Torah.  The Board of Trustees selected both as the 2012 Simchat Torah honorees.

Sue Ann's involvement with our congregation's Religious School started in 1977, when she was asked to substitute for a class.  Aside from her professional qualifications as an educator, Sue Ann had attended Hebrew School at The Flatbush Jewish Center in Brooklyn all through elementary school, walking a mile every day after school. "My grandparents were Orthodox," she explained, "and they insisted that my parents send my brother and me to an afternoon school." This knowledge allowed Sue Ann to get involved in Hebrew school.

At Agudat Achim, Sue Ann started the Shabbat Tot program with Rabbi Sidney Zimmelman's input, taught kindergarten, first and second grade.  She spent most of her career teaching second grade, and helped change the curriculum by introducing Hebrew reading and writing in a midweek program for second graders.  Sue Ann co-authored a book on learning to write Hebrew script.  For the last 10 years, Sue Ann held the position of special needs teacher.  In addition to working with kids in an individual education program, she substituted in all Religious School grades, assisted children with Bar and Bat Mitzvah review, and gave extra support to kids who needed a little extra time one on one.

"The very best part of teaching all these years is the relationships and friendships I have made with the students, parents, teachers, and rabbis," she said.  At Agudat Achim, she was influenced by wonderful teachers, principals and rabbis who continued to nourish her desire to keep learning. Marilyn Silberstein was her first principal and Jack Mintzer her last.  "Marilyn was a wealth of information and Jack was a master of organization, endless energy and thoroughness," Sue Ann said.  They both encouraged Sue Ann to be creative and to take on more challenges.

Coincidentally, Sam Lefkowitz's late wife, Elaine, taught first grade right next door to Sue Ann's second grade class for many years.

Sam was raised in a Conservative home and always became a member of a Conservative synagogue wherever he lived.  He joined Congregation Agudat Achim's Investment Committee in 1996 and became acting chairman in 1999.  For 13 years Sam has been guiding our endowment investments carefully and conservatively with the support of a terrific committee.

His contributions to the Jewish community are diverse and demonstrate the depth of his connection to our congregation.  From 1981 to 1985, he served as synagogue treasurer, and in 1985, he became the treasurer of the synagogue School Construction Project.

In 2002, Sam served as treasurer of the 110th Anniversary Celebration, which was a financial success. Per Sam, we ended up with a nice profit, half of which went directly to the synagogue operating budget and the remaining half was used to set up the 110th Anniversary Fund, which is currently funding several projects at the synagogue.

Approximately at the same time Sam served on our Investment Committee, he also volunteered as secretary and then treasurer of the Schenectady B'nai B'rith Housing Co. (1996 to 2005). He rejoined B'nai B'rith Housing Co. as treasurer in 2010.

In addition to these various commitments, Sam has been a steady volunteer at the Schenectady Inner City Ministry Food Pantry since 1999, and a volunteer driver for Jewish Family Services since 2007. "I have always been involved in synagogue and community groups wherever we lived because I enjoy being involved and helping when I can," Sam said.

We are proud of the contributions Sue Ann and Sam have made to our community and are privileged to have had the opportunity to honor them on a holiday that celebrates our reliance on the teachings and values upheld by the Torah.

Rabbi's Column
By Rabbi Ted

ted Next week, on the first weekend in November, we are looking forward to our annual scholar-in-residence Kallah (learning gathering).  We are excited this year to have Dr. Rachel Anisfeld, a Rabbinics scholar and member of our Capital District community.  Dr. Anisfeld will be teaching on Midrash, her original area of study, as well as on one of her major interests --  Hasidut, the writings of the Hasidic masters.  It is interesting to note that, though it is today associated with strict Orthodoxy, Hasidism started out as a radical break from Judaism as it was understood at the time.  Its founder, the Baal Shem Tov, and his successors taught that Talmud scholarship and Halakhic exactitude (often available mainly to the wealthy elite) were not the only  paths to God, that the poor, uneducated Jew could please God just as much with simple prayer and the yearnings of his heart.  Such an attitude drew the ire of many rabbis, especially the Vilna Gaon, who continued to emphasize Torah scholarship as the highest value.  The Mitnagdim ("opponents") mocked Hasidim and in some communities even had them excommunicated.  Hasidic spiritual teaching remains inspiring to many non-Orthodox Jews today, and sometimes evinces a radical theology that belies Hasidut's current reputation.

I want to encourage you to attend some or all of the sessions.  I also want to put in a plea for our annual Kallah.  Those who have run it in the past are no longer able to do so (and I give them a big thank you), and if we do not find successors this will be our last scholar-in-residence weekend.  I really believe that learning and broadening our Jewish horizons should be a central value at Agudat Achim, and that our community would be much the poorer without this annual event.  If you have interest in becoming involved with the Kallah, please let me or our programming chairs - Steve Schmidt and Rob Fox - know.  Thanks to all of you in advance.

If you were not able to attend High Holy Day services at Agudat Achim, you can read Rabbi Ted's messages by clicking here. You can also access our president's Kol Nidre message by clicking here.

34th Annual Carrot Festival a Huge Success!

By Hillary Fink

As you can see from the photos, a little bit of - OK, a lot of - rain did not put a damper on the Carrot Festival festivities on October 14.  Thanks to our fabulous volunteers, everything ran smoothly and went off without a hitch; however, we were all relieved when the sun came out for the afternoon!

To thank all of the volunteers for all of their hard work, please join us for our second annual "Carrot Festival Shabbat" on November 3, which also happens to be during our Kallah weekend.  During the service, volunteers and committee members will be honored, and the annual Carrot Award will be given to.....You have to come to the service to find out who it is!

Extra special thanks go to the Carrot Festival Committee who has been hard at work since January to make our Carrot Festival a success:

Men's Club:  Annual Grounds Cleanup
and Election of Officers
By Andy Gavens

It was a beautiful morning on Sunday, September 9, for Men's Club to perform their annual cleanup of the synagogue grounds.  Nearly 20 members and their families participated.  The entrance way, Caterer's Lane, and some of the front grounds were cleared of overgrown bushes and limbs.  This hard work supports our having a welcoming appearance to congregants and guests while opening needed parking spaces for the High Holy Days and Carrot Festival.  At the end of the day, the group still had sufficient energy to relocate all of the High Holy Day machzors from the basement to the social hall in preparation for services.

During a short break in the grounds cleanup, a meeting was held with the Men's Club members.  Mitch Kessler was elected president and Dick Mendelson treasurer.  Multiple ideas for future Men's Club programs were discussed.  Please look for upcoming program announcements.  If you have not already, be sure to send in your Men's Club membership form.

Kallah 2012 with Dr. Rachel Anisfeld is Coming: November 2-4
By Steve Schmidt

We invite everyone to join us for a weekend of Jewish learning with Dr. Rachel Anisfeld, Congregation Agudat Achim's Kallah speaker for 2012. Dr. Anisfeld holds a PhD in Rabbinic Literature from the University of Pennsylvania, and  teaches and writes on a wide variety of Jewish subjects, including parsha, Talmud, and Hasidic literature. She is the author of Sustain Me With Raisin-Cakes: Pesikta deRav Kahana and the Popularization of Rabbinic Judaism (Brill, 2009), and writes a weekly parsha blog at http://parshathoughtsmore.blogspot.com.

The theme of this year's Kallah is "Feeling Connected: To God, to the Past, to Each Other," and will explore a range of Jewish writings on the theme of connectedness. The opening talk will be Friday night November 2 at 8:30 (after 7:30 services) and will discuss the connections between Abraham and the generations of the Jewish nation that Abraham was promised would follow him. The second talk will be Saturday night November 3 at 7:30pm (following Havdalah services at 7pm) and will discuss the Piaseczner Rav and his advice on mindfulness and connection to God. It will be followed by a dessert reception. The third talk will be at a Men's Club breakfast on Sunday November 4 - breakfast at 10:00, talk at 10:45 - and will discuss the essential interconnectedness of Klal Yisrael, the congregation of the Jewish people. All talks are free and open to the public; please make reservations for the Saturday night reception and the Men's Club breakfast.

More information about the Kallah is available at the synagogue and on the Agudat Achim website. We look forward to connecting with you at all three of these events!

Playground Project

By Elyse Wohl

If you haven't been out to the playground lately, then you probably do not know that changes have been made. I took this on as my Girl Scout Gold Leadership Award Project because I noticed a few years ago that some of the playground equipment was in a state of disrepair and not totally safe for the children. So, I researched playgrounds and with the help of my advisors, Steve Cohen and my dad, Howard Wohl, I came up with a proposal to change some of the equipment and fix other things. The Girl Scout Council approved my proposal and then the real work began. When I knew exactly what I wanted to do and purchase, I needed to secure the funding to complete the project. My budget was about $1500.

I applied to the Educational Endowment Committee for this money. The committee really liked my project and offered me $500, plus they said they would give me another $500 if I could raise $500 on my own. That's when I reached out to Women's Network, Men's Club and Rabbi Ted. Through their generosity, I was able to raise the $500 needed to get the matching $500 from Educational Endowment.

At this point, we were able to order the replacement equipment and get the other necessary materials to complete all of all the work.  The working part of the project took most of the summer and into the fall to complete because we were dealing with holidays and Shabbat when we could not work, weather delays and busy schedules. However, in the end it was all worth the hard work we put in. The children now have a new swing set and a new tire swing; the yellow twisty slide has been moved and cleaned; the cracks in the wood frames have been filled and the wood re-stained; the metal pieces of the old set have been re-painted; the fence has been straightened back out; the bench has been re-stained and the rubber ground cover has been re-distributed.

I would like to thank everyone who helped with this project. This includes my advisors, Steve Cohen and Howard Wohl, the girls in my troop and their parents who helped on the work-day, Dan Banowetz (a parent from the RiverRun Montessori School), Gary Dayter, my brother Mitchell and his friend Mark Dittmar, Rabbi Ted, Women's Network, Men's Club and the Educational Endowment Committee.

The playground will be officially opened and re-dedicated on Sunday November 4 at 10:00 a.m. Please join us.

I hope that the children get lots of enjoyment out of the playground for years to come.

What is Reyut all About?

By Judy Ben-Ami

Many congregants have asked what Reyut is all about, and when someone suggested that an article about Reyut should be included in the bulletin, the timing was perfect!  I contacted Linda Birnby, (Reyut's co-chair with Denise Narpastek and Ruth Fraster) to share some stories about what they do.

Linda loves volunteering for Reyut, and she was willing to tell me all about the ways Reyut helps congregants (listed below); however, she couldn't help with even one story since all of the help that is given to congregants is confidential.  Here are some examples of the great things that Reyut has done during the past year:

  •  5 Shiva meals were prepared for grieving families.
  •  80 Reyut volunteers made 120 hospital, home and nursing  home visits.
  •  93 rides were provided.
  •  56 Reyut cards and flowers were delivered for Rosh Hashanah.
  •  45 Reyut Purim packages were delivered.

Eighty volunteers help Reyut with various projects, enriching their lives by doing so.  You are welcome and encouraged to talk to Linda, Ruth or Denise to see how you can help with this special Women's Network group.  You will never be expected to say "yes" when asked to do something.

Biblical Garden Update

By Josie Kivort

"The Flowers appear on the earth; a time for singing is come."   Song of Songs 2:12

We hope you are all enjoying the beauty of the recent work that was accomplished with your support. Have you taken a walk through the garden yet? You will pass through the new red cedar arbor that will gradually turn to a gray weathered look over the next year or two.  Watch the grape vine grow up the side of it and recall the quote from Micah 4:4:  "...they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and none shall make them afraid..."  Then, continue through the fragrant herb garden, filled with fennel, oregano, thyme, hyssop, garlic chives, parsley, rosemary and more.  When you get to the end of the stepping stones, know that in the spring, we intend to cultivate the final section of the space to the end of the education center.  In that area we plan to have a bench, a fig tree, a flowering almond, a muga pine, grasses to represent wheat and barley and maybe a surprise against the brick wall.

Please note: the low accent wall is for aesthetic value and erosion control only.  For your safety, please do not walk on it.

Thank you to those who have recently made donations to the Biblical Garden Fund.  More funds are needed in order to continue to grow and maintain this beautiful, welcoming space. Please consider a donation to this Fund.

Once again, I wish to recognize the members of our hard-working committee:  Arleen Brilliant, Marty Farber, Linda Finkle, Diana Gelfand, Barrie & Mark Handelman, Marcia Jaros, Jane Kintz & Rise' Routenberg.
