Burlington Elementary School Outdoor Classroom
Before Spring this outdoor courtyard located in the center of the Burlington Elementary school building was unusable. Toyota North America started a partnership with Burlington similar to the one they did with Goodridge Elementary. Toyota Safety and Environmental Leader Angie Meyer says this is called the STEM Garden using science, technology, engineering and math to engage students in all areas of STEM. This is the second phase which includes building raised garden beds and planting vegetables and flowers.
Teacher Gina Owens says students are planting zucchini, cucumber and radishes. It's part their salsa garden that they will cultivate in the fall. The plan is for the students to pick their vegetables in the fall and prepare them. Volunteers from Toyota will return to do a taste test.
Toyota North America's business partnering group TERRA Toyota's Environmental Resources for Responsible Actions provided all the materials, equipment and volunteers. TERRA looks for opportunities to improve sustainability and improve the environment. Angie Meyer says they believe in tapping into a child's mind early with STEM projects to make an impact on these students because they may be Toyota's future employees.
