CAREER EXPLORATION
CHS takes trophy 4th year in a row!

Conner High School
Aerospace Program

This is Richard Henson's Aeronautical Engineering Wing Design class.  Each year they enter a wing design competition at the University of Kentucky's College of Engineering and each year for the past three years Mr. Henson's Conner High School class has taken 1st place.  This year they faced a dual challenge; one to design a specific wing and two Mr. Henson was virtually starting over with new students with only one veteran student from his previous wing design classes.

Senior James Delahunty says what he likes most about this class is getting hands on experience versus reading a textbook.  "I like learning from my mistakes and you can't do that with textbooks." Here Delahunty and fellow students are working on the measurements for the wing.  The wing is made of foam.  They have cut holes into it in a checkerboard fashion. This year's competition requirement is to know weight and balance.  So they have to design a wing as light as possible yet it has to be able to carry multiple weights; liquids, solids and loose coins. The further back the weights are from the nose of the aircraft the more points the team gets.  Below are pictures from the competition.

CHS Aeronautical teacher Richard Henson

Students from Mr. Henson's Aeronautical Engineering class have a head start in college. Mr. Henson says 75% of his students have gone on to study Engineering and about 50% of those go into Aerospace Engineering.

Mr. Henson's class once again proved superior in wing design, winning the trophy for a 4th year in a row at the UK Somerset, Kentucky competition. It was a proud accomplishment not only the students but also for Mr. Henson who is retiring this year.

SCHOOL BOARD NOTES - May

Break The Mold

Abbegail Kuhn
North Pointe Elementary 5th grade teacher Abbegail Kuhn is May's Break The Mold recipient.  Recipients can be nominated either by administrators, colleagues or parents.  This parent nominator said of Mrs. Kuhn:
"The greatest compliment a parent can give is to entrust their child with another. Mrs. Abbegail Kuhn takes the role seriously and treats the students as if they were her own.  This probably seems like a natural comment, as teachers do love and nurture their students every year; however, Mrs. Kuhn has been a game-changer for my child and I will be forever grateful."  'My daughter has struggled academically since she started school.
Communication is part of education, but Mrs. Kuhn takes it to the next level.  Multiple times this year I have received an email or voice message to let me know my daughter has done something amazing in class. But, more importantly, my child receives encouragement throughout the year, including post-it notes stuck on her agenda and feedback on assignments.
Mrs. Kuhn treats every child like they are the only one.  The community talks--and Mrs. Kuhn's name is synonymous with 'the best teacher-ever'.  She reaches out to families, has helped a classmate move and has taken them dinner.  She helped a child find their lost dog, checks on students when they are sick and goes to events outside of school. She truly knows every student in the room.
Mrs. Kuhn deserves recognition.  I will never be able to express how I feel about Abbegail Kuhn because words cannot begin to do justice for all that she has done for my daughter and her classmates.'

Break The Mold is sponsored by Yesterday's Cafe and Matcha Bar.

Dr. Karen Cheser was honored as the Robert
Storer/Toyota Business Engagement Collaboration Award Recipient, during the Northern Kentucky Excellence in Education Celebration. This award recognizes an educator who goes above and beyond to create collaborative business partnerships within a school or school district. This is important because a partnership with business helps our students in every way imaginable - it can make their learning more relevant and depending on the partnership it helps the students develop work ethic skills. There are so many different ways to engage business in schools- and Karen is a master at bringing business into the Boone County Schools!

2016 Outstanding Business Woman

Right: Sue Sorrell
Congratulations to Sue Sorrell of Conner High School. She is the recipient of the Helen Carroll Champion of Education Award from the Outstanding Women of Northern Kentucky 2016 Awards.
Mrs. Sorrell didn't set out to be an educator.  She started as an accountant, but was inspired by what she saw in her husband, also a teacher.  "I saw what a difference he was making and decided to pursue a job in the field of education.  And since I had a business background, an accounting background, (teaching business) it just seemed a natural place to go," she says.

At Conner High School, she went beyond teaching the subject in the classroom.  She was the internship coordinator for the Tech Prep Regional Network, an advisor for Future Business Leaders of America and an advisor for the Leadership League.  She is known as "the teacher in NKY who really
understands business and how to prepare students for success," said Janice Way of Leadership Kentucky in her nomination letter.

Sorrell's students are thankful for her passion and assistance.  Korey Ryle with GE Aviation Management said in her nomination letter. "She taught me to set challenging goals for myself, have confidence in my abilities, and respond with resiliency when obstacles arise.  Without her support, I doubt that I would have achieved the successes of which I am so proud."
