The Boone County School District 5-year Strategic Plan is focused on "Career, College, and Life" readiness for all students. The plan was developed using the input of parents, educators, and other stakeholders collected at numerous community meetings. #Boone2020 is an exciting new social media campaign designed specifically to promote dialogue and transparency around the goals and details of the strategic plan. We want to engage in a two-way dialogue with you and give you opportunities to learn more about innovative teaching and learning going on in Boone County Schools. This week we take you to Gray Middle School.

Library Multi Media Class
Gray Middle School

Students taking this class have a fascination with multi media and like to produce projects for the Gray student body.  This project is called "4,3,2". The numbers referencing 4 stories in 3 minutes every 2 weeks.  8th grade student Benjamin Ledford says each student has a specific job and in their jobs they are learning the many different aspects of media from researching their subject to what types of devices they can use to shoot video and how to conduct an interview.

Gray Librarian Amy Lutz says students are graded on collaboration,  how they delegate roles as well as their video content.  She is also teaching them about the issues of copyright.  She wants the students to learn to share their own content but also how to properly use other people's material and creative content by giving proper credit or requesting permission for use.

Students acting out their lines.

Students in this class are using their iPads to record their video and Google Classroom to do their work.  Google Classroom saves time and paper, and makes it easy to create classes, distribute assignments, communicate, and stay organized.

Teachers can quickly see who has or hasn't completed the work, and provide direct, real-time feedback and grades right in Google Classroom.
STUDENT LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

The Superintendent's Student Leadership Council (SSAC) wrapped up their 2015-2016 service doing Healthy Choice Talks in several Boone County Elementary schools.  They visited 4th grade classes with a 15 minute presentation on Healthy Choices and resources.  Their presentation included a 2 minute video introduction, a survey, and a 10 minute discussion accompanied by a question and answer session with students about their concerns.  School psychologists and counselors were on hand to assist the SSAC with difficult questions from 4th graders.

Last year Student School Board Representative Michael Henry included anti-substance use and abuse as part of his campaign platform.

SSAC students practiced team building as they celebrated their year of service and leadership at Sports of All Sorts where they bowled, played volleyball, basketball and arcade games.

They each received a certificate thanking them for their leadership service within their schools and throughout the district.

NORTHERN KENTUCKY'S OUTSTANDING WOMEN         Congratulations to Sue Sorrell of Conner High School. She is the recipient of the Helen Carroll Champion of Education Award from the Outstanding Women of Northern Kentucky 2016 Awards.
Mrs. Sorrell didn't set out to be an educator.  She started as an accountant, but was inspired by what she saw in her husband, also a teacher.  "I saw what a difference he was making and decided to pursue a job in the field of education.  And since I had a business background, an accounting background, (teaching business) it just seemed a natural place to go," she says.

At Conner High School, she went beyond teaching the subject in the classroom.  She was the internship coordinator for the Tech Prep Regional Network, an advisor for Future Business Leaders of America and an advisor for the Leadership League.  She is known as "the teacher in NKY who really understands business and how to prepare students for success," said Janice Way of Leadership Kentucky in her nomination letter.

Sorrell's students are thankful for her passion and assistance.  Korey Ryle with GE Aviation Management said in her nomination letter. "She taught me to set challenging goals for myself, have confidence in my abilities, and respond with resiliency when obstacles arise.  Without her support, I doubt that I would have achieved the successes of which I am so proud."
SCHOOL BOARD NOTES from April

Break The Mold
Right: Ken Kemper LBS

Longbranch Elementary Electrician Ken Kemper is April's Break The Mold recipient. Several staff members nominated and all had similar things to say about him.  Here are just a few:

Any time I have had the pleasure of talking with Kenny I am always greeted with a friendly smile.  He patiently listens while I explain the list of problems that may be occurring with the technology in my space.  He is detailed in helping me problem solve, always offers back-up solutions and follows through to the very last detail.  Kenny is also amazing at coming back at a later date just to make sure that everything is still working as it should.  We all rely on technology and feel the pains when it goes down...however having Kenny come to save the day is definitely a PERK to your tech going down.
Kenny is the kind of person that just makes you happy when you're around him because he is always smiling, is a tremendous listener, but more importantly he puts that listening to work by accurately diagnosing and solving problems throughout the building.  We are thrilled to have Kenny assigned to Longbranch and feel as though he should be recognized for providing extraordinary service to our school and to our community.  Boone County is fortunate to have such a tremendous asset in our maintenance department.

Break The Mold is sponsored by Yesterday's Cafe and Matcha Bar.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

RA Jones Middle School

The Jones STEM Bike Club for 2016 has completed another mission of providing education, training, assembly and bicycles to 16 students who earned membership into the club.  Here students, volunteers and Bike Club Instructor Greg Davis make final checks and preps on the bikes for the students inaugural ride.

Time Warner Cable again this year sponsored the 2nd annual STEM Bike Club at Jones. The selection process for participants included a letter written by the students to RA Jones administrators about why they would like to have a bicycle.  Selection was also based on need.

This project was completely dependent upon volunteers from the community to come in and mentor a student on a weekly basis for an hour over a period of about 8 weeks. Some of the volunteers helping students build their bikes included law enforcement officers from both the Florence Police Department and the Boone County Sheriff's Department.  They provided the helmets for each student receiving a bicycle.  Each volunteer received a plaque of recognition for their service.
