The Boone County School District 5-year Strategic Plan is focused on "Career, College, and Life" readiness for all students. The plan was developed using the input of parents, educators, and other stakeholders collected at numerous community meetings. #Boone2020 is an exciting new social media campaign designed specifically to promote dialogue and transparency around the goals and details of the strategic plan. We want to engage in a two-way dialogue with you and give you opportunities to learn more about innovative teaching and learning going on in Boone County Schools. This week we take you to ACE Academy.

Student Leader Program
ACE Academy

High school students at the Alternative Center for Education are learning, leading and building.  They are part of a new Student Leader Program where they are being taught about the impact they can have on others whether it's positive or negative.  Student leaders Jeremy Carballo and Benjamin Taylor seen below in pictures have been very good role models to the middle school students at ACE Academy.
School Psychologist Alan Mullins says through this program students learn that they can set their own learning culture. ACE Academy leaders match up younger students with high school students to help them with their academics, behavior, communication and socialization.

Math Teacher Andrew Brown says the Student Leader Program has positively influenced his students and he also further incentivizes them to complete their school work with cool projects such as this whimsical or crooked playhouse they built.  He started them off creating playhouse models out of yellow card stock.  Next was drawing blueprints based on their designs and upscaling the measurements.

It took 23 students about three weeks to build it.  It's not a traditional playhouse.  The sides are trapizoids, rather than rectangles and that Brown says became a mathematical journey for the students.  It was designed to be modular, with each wall being its own separate unit.  The roof separates into two units and it's designed to be carried out and reassembled with relative ease.

Andrew Brown says from time to time he would have to turn a student away that had not completed their other class assignments.  He told them they had to go back to their other classes to get their work done before being allowed to help on construction of the playhouse.  It worked!  He said once a student was turned away, they never again came to class unprepared.  Brown says after they completed the playhouse the students remain wowed by what they created all by themselves!

Alan Mullins says some students learn better when a project or class assignment is active hands on.  This and other projects at ACE Academy are designed to allow students to express themselves and learn to demonstrate their knowledge and intelligence through their work .  That's where Jeremy and Ben come in.  They say they now love school because of their new roles and responsibilities.   Mullins says when someone, a peer or an adult shows a child that they are interested in them and care about them it makes a world of difference in the kind of future that child will have.

Break The Mold

New Haven Elementary School Teacher Robin Vogelpohl is February's Break The Mold recipient.  New Haven Parent Jill Price writes about Robin: " While we know that certainly time is something all could use more of, it does not keep one of your teachers from charging forward from aiding her students. Class size changes monthly and her student's talents also range as one would expect, however she moves forward as though each student is a royal. She does exactly what one would come to expect but also so much more.
We believe that this teacher is truly a blessing for all the children in her class and all those who have the good fortune of interacting with her. Our child faced many challenges at the beginning of the school year but with her efforts she has raised his academics and personal confidence. We attribute his success to Robin Vogelpohl, who is better than royalty! Robin is an amazing Fourth Grade Teacher whose tireless efforts have helped shape our child into a positive thinking young man. Robin, you are making a difference with every student, every day. Thank you for allowing teaching to be more than just a job for you. Thank you for sharing your gifts with others and for inspiring others. You should be the mold for others!"

Break The Mold is sponsored by Yesterday's Cafe and Matcha Bar.
