Ockerman Elementary Vex Robots
Ruth Palmer teaches the STEAM Lab (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathemathics) at Ockerman Elementary. This is a Project Lead The Way 12 day unit on Vex Robots. Vex Robots are similar to Legos in that students follow step by step instructions to build robots. Mrs. Palmer says the students are given a problem on day one, they work on content knowledge to solve the problem with an engineering aspect near the end of the 12 days.
Students Shaylynn White and Austin Martin are very excited every day they get to come to Mrs. Palmer's STEAM Lab. Shaylynn says, "I like that we get to be creative in here and Mrs. Palmer expects us to learn to be independent. That prepares us for middle school." Austin says, "Robots are fun to build and you can do interesting things with them."

These 5th grade students are faced with the challenge of building a robot completely on their own. They started with learning what a robot actually is and the design history of the robot.
Here they are testing how robots do inputs and outputs which leads them to learning how to make the robot move blocks across the room. Mrs. Palmer says they always focus on how an engineer uses the engineering design process to solve problems. She says using this method can help students with other aspects of their education and eventually with problem solving on the job once they start their post high school and college careers.

 CONGRATULATIONS!
Ryle High
Congratulations to Ryle seniors Mason Carnes, Kyle Cousin, Henry Kneale and Jake Laumann. They each have received full tuition scholarships to attend Robert Morris University in Chicago. These scholarships are e-gaming scholarships. The four students came to the attention of RMU for their e-gaming skills. RMU wants them to game exclusively for it's athletic department. They play as a team online in the virtual world of Counterstrike. What started out as a fun hobby has lead to a future college career for the teens as e-athletes. As RMU e-athletes the four will have a coach and play in a variety of video game competitions. Carnes, Cousin, Kneale and Laumann are all honor roll students at Ryle and each has scored a 30 or above on their ACT's. The four plan to major in computer science and business at RMU.
Boone County High
Congratulations to Boone County High School for receiving two "Golden Footballs" from the National Football League. These balls represent two NFL players who graduated from Boone County High and played in the Superbowl - Shaun Alexandar and Irv Goode. These are in celebration of the NFL's 50th Super Bowl. Boone County High School is also in the running for a $5,000 grant for new football helmets. The announcement on which high school wins the grant is expected to be made during the Superbowl. More information about this can be found by clicking here.
