5-year District Strategic Plan

The Boone County School District 5-year Strategic Plan is focused on "Career, College, and Life" readiness for all students.  The plan was developed using the input of parents, educators, and other stakeholders collected at numerous community meetings.
#Boone2020 is an exciting new social media campaign designed specifically to promote dialogue and transparency around the goals and details of the strategic plan.  We want to engage in a two-way dialogue with you and give you opportunities to learn more about innovative teaching and learning going on in Boone County Schools.  This week we take you to Boone County High School for Career Exploration.

Principles of Game Design
IT Pathway

This is Mr. Hughes Principles of Game Design class at BCHS.  Here students are learning all aspects of gaming from gaming history, two-dimensional gaming to how to create and program computer games.  Before the end of the semester they have 6 projects to complete.  The final production being a game they've created using industry standard software.  Some other tools they use include Infographics, iPad software, Power point and Word Documents just to name a few.

The projects in this class are quite serious as Mr. Hughes encourages students to work from the premise that a gaming company is potentially asking each student to create a game.   Instead of taking notes in a standard notebook they keep a binder online called a "live binder."  This live binder allows Mr. Hughes to go on line anytime to keep tabs on his students progress.  In the picture above students are working on their own original ideas for their games.   Each student must create hand drawn characters and include a story line with a synopsis, the back story, and the premise. Their next big project will be 3-D printing to develop the images for the games.

Student Luyiza Kamelchuk is artistic and so hand drawn characters will not be a problem for her.  She is developing a game to discover new colors.  She says her game characters will go on an adventure to find these colors.

Mr. Hughes says gaming is a multi-billion dollar industry and what these students are learning in his class will put them on the pathway to working for a major gaming company if they so choose after graduation from high school and college. What Mr. Hughes is most proud of is that his gaming classes give his students a voice, acceptance for their intelligence and expertise when they leave his class.

Mr. Hughes started Game Design classes at Boone County High School about 4 years ago and it's taken off so well that the Commonwealth has made game design a Career Pathway.
#Boone2020 Survey

The Boone County Schools have implemented a 5-Year District Strategic Plan for ensuring that all graduates of our schools are Career, College, and Life Ready.  At the plan's core are three objectives: providing students a World Class Education, Student Empowerment, and Resource Optimization. This month we have started implementing #Boone2020 - a social media campaign to connect and dialogue with you and the community about what the strategic plan means for your child. In order to measure and improve the effectiveness of our communication with you, we ask that you take a short survey so that we can determine what you already know about the 5-Year District Strategic Plan. Thank you for your willingness to partner with us on this exciting journey! Go to this link to take the survey.

Superintendent's Student Advisory Council

The Superintendent's Student Advisory Council (SSAC) held their 5th monthly meeting Wednesday with special guests from the Federal Bureau of Investigations and the President of Northern Kentucky NAACP.  The SSAC consists of three representatives from each school high school, and two representatives from each middle and elementary school.  The goal of the SSAC is to develop 21st Century Leadership Skills as a group and individually return to schools to  effectively implement characteristics of an effective leader raising student voice and encouraging meaningful participation in student-led initiatives.

Jerome Bowles is president of the Northern Kentucky NAACP.  Mr. Bowles talked to students about his organization and its role in the civil rights field.  Craig Donnachie, is a senior agent with the FBI office of Covington. He explained the role of the FBI to students and both Mr. Bowles and Agent Donnachie fielded interesting questions from students about what they do in their everyday jobs and what their organizations contribute to society.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS

Gray Middle School

The Gray Middle School Community raised over $4,800.00 for the 2015 Annual Holiday Drive to buy clothes and wish list items for 45 children from 20 GMS families  in need.  The National Junior Honor Society and Student Council members went to Walmart (see photos) to buy the wish list items.  Clothing items were purchased from JC Penney in Florence.  Both JC Penney and Walmart proved to be wonderful community partners in this endeavor, offering discounts on all items purchased.

National Junior Honor Society volunteers from Gray Middle School went to the Welcome House in Covington during Christmas break. During this visit the students and parents wrapped gifts for children in the shelters, organized their donation closet, and even chose presents for some of the families in need. The students worked diligently for nearly 4 hours. The Welcome House was very thankful to the group for coming in and helping.

Gray Middle School Dance Team participated in a toy and craft holiday drive for Rob's Kids.
A wide assortment of toys were donated by the Gatorette dance team families.
Rob's Kids Inc. was formed by the Potter family to help other families. They are passionately committed to making a difference in the lives of children who struggle with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Each year Rob's Kids collects toys and makes 150 bags and delivers them to Cincinnati Children's Psychiatry at College Hill.
The Gray Middle Dance team will be competing at Mason County High School in Maysville for the Regional Competition on January 30th.

Coach Tombragel took her 8th grade basketball team to the Crosstown Shootout between the XU and UC women's basketball teams.  The GMS girls were able to go and support one or our favorite former Lady Gator players, Jenna Crittenden, who is now a senior playing at Xavier. Jenna came to see the team after the game to meet the girls and hand out signed photos. It was an awesome experience, not only to watch Xavier play, but also to see a former GMS student following her dreams of playing college ball.

GMS 8th Grade Girls basketball team gives back to the community

During their Christmas break the Gray Middle School 8th Grade Girls Basketball Team volunteered with the Isaiah House Mission to serve the less fortunate in Covington, Kentucky.  The team worked to help load food and supplies for the families to take home.  The girls worked very hard and proved they are learning many life skills, not just on the court, but off the court as well.
