Honoring a Volunteer at Kelly Elementary

Kelly Elementary volunteer JoAnn Harvey has been recognized for her volunteer services and for being a family caregiver by both the AARP and Boone County Schools.  Mrs. Harvey tirelessly spent 30 years taking care of her ailing husband until his recent death. November is National Family Caregivers Month and the AARP recognized 53 caregivers, one from each state as well as Washington, D. C.. Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.  Each winning caregiver received what's called a Portrait of Care, an artist's painting of family caregivers and their loved ones.  Executive Director of Student Services Kathy Reutman presented Mrs. Harvey with a Volunteer Services certificate. Since Mr. Harvey's death Mrs. Harvey has found another caregiving job, as a volunteer for Kelly Elementary.  The students and staff there love Mrs. Harvey as does the principal, Kathleen Gutzwiller, who is JoAnn's daughter.

Florence Elementary ----->
Florence Elementary presented the sixth annual Vocabulary Parade that involved the entire school.

The parents were invited to watch their child pass by, dressed to illustrate their vocabulary word.
The students were assigned a general academic vocabulary word, for which families helped design a costume. The assigned word had to be on the costume or poster. The students and their families became very creative in demonstrating the image of their word. The students demonstrated a life size camera for photographer, a life size tape dispenser for adhesive, and even a life size bumblebee.
A vocabulary word hall was created with some of the many words presented during the parade. The parade was a fun way to increase the student's vocabulary knowledge.

 Many of the grade level teachers had group costumes and were parading with their class. The office staff added a twist to 'Superhero's'.  Each dressed as a character that represented a different vocabulary word, Robin - Defender, Bat Woman - Justice, Deputy - Extraordinary, Thor - Thunder, Wonder Woman - Wonder, and Superman/Clark Kent - Super.  Other unique group illustrations were winter Olympic sports, going through the decades, the seasons, and an array of idioms.

Freedom Writers at RA Jones Middle School

Original Freedom Writers Tiffony Jacobs and Dustin Michael Infante visited RA Jones Middle School last week as part of the new FW Outreach Program that allows original Freedom Writers to share their personal stories of overcoming adversity to achieve success. School Board Member Ed Massey along with help from Ehmet Hayes Architects and Richard Cooper secured the visit to Jones.  RA Jones Principal Tony Pastura says  "Many of our students realize they can relate to Tiffony and Dustin and how they grew up.  Through the experiences of the Freedom Writers Tiffony and Dustin these students see that they too can beat any odds they face and become successful in life."

Ryle High School Marching Band Competes in Grand Nationals

The Ryle High School Marching Band competed in the Bands of America Grand National Championships on November 14, at the Lucas Oil Stadium receiving an award of semi-finalist. Out of 95 bands from across the country that competed, only 30 bands received a score high enough to continue on as a semi-finalist.

"It was a crazy couple of days for our 160 marching band members and their families," said Bob Elliott, Ryle High School Band Director. "But it was also an incredible experience to perform on an NFL football field in a closed dome stadium along with thousands of other marching band students."

Music for All's Bands of America Grand National Championships, presented by Yamaha is the nation's most exciting marching band event. Grand Nationals is an educational performance opportunity open to all high school bands, on a first-come, first-served basis. It is also a spectacular music and pageantry event, one that band fans from across the nation and around the world travel to for the exciting and creative performances.

The Ryle High School Band also ranked 5th in the state for 5A bands at the Kentucky Music Educator Association's state final competitions held in October. The highest ranking the school has ever achieved in 13 years and the highest since the school size classification change in 2005.
