INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY

snowplow_big.jpg
We are in the season of unpredictable winter weather. Winter storms necessitate Boone County Schools to alter daily schedules or routines within the district. To be prepared please make sure your child's school has up-to-date phone numbers and emergency contacts for your family. Also, have child-care arrangements already in place should the need arise to close school early, delay or cancel school. Click here for the BCS Inclement Weather policy. Click here for the District Wind Chill Policy.

We also have introduced a new way to get streamlined information about any school closings or delays. To get exclusively weather related information please follow us on Twitter @BCSWx. We will no longer post weather related information to @Boone_County. We will also continue to post weather information on the Boone County Schools webpage (located above left in Quick Links) and on our Facebook page.

SCHOOL BOARD NOTES

Break The Mold Award
Jack and Ellen Steele

Jack and Ellen Steele are co-recipients of the November 2015 BREAK THE MOLD award! Jack and Ellen were nominated by Erika Bowles, Principal at Longbranch Elementary. Ellen is a world language teacher and Jack is an art teacher at Longbranch. Together, they impact all 850 students at Longbranch weekly. Recently, they formed a non-profit group called Faith2Move with the intention of using Project Based Learning to teach a group of students about the importance of clean water around the world. The children worked all summer long learning about clean water, how to obtain it and why it's necessary. They designed their own service project and held a yard sale. The students ran the yard sale in alignment with Longbranch's mission statement to prepare our students to achieve beyond expectation, lead with great character and impact our community. In addition, Jack and Ellen are model teachers. They exemplify the district's reputation of being a world class learning environment. Finally, they love the students, they form lasting bonds, they build relationships and they make children love to learn, love to read, and have an impact on people. Congratulations to Jack and Ellen Steele!

Burlington Elementary

These are pictures from Burlington Service Learning Project (Advocacy). They did research by going to the aquarium, zoo, and Thomas More Field Station. They chose an animal in their specific habitat and wrote a paragraph about it to post in the second grade hallway. They then created tri-folds describing the problem and how they can solve it by educating their parents/guardians.

Florence Elementary

Remke Market, a community friend of Florence Elementary, supplied a plump pumpkin to every classroom for a Pumpkin Decorating Contest.  Teachers and students took ownership and became very artsy.  Many creations emerged from a simple pumpkin. Spray painting, wrapping, gluing, and painting were the popular tools for decorating.
The pumpkin creations went on display at Remke Markets and allowed the community and Florence Elementary family members to vote for the winning pumpkin. At the end of October the votes were tallied and the first place winner was Ann Reeves' fourth grade Tin Man pumpkin. Second place was Jason Frilling's fifth grade Fiesta pumpkin, and the third place winner was Shari Testerman's fifth grade "We've got our eyes on you" pumpkin. The first place class will receive a pizza party provided by the Florence Resource Center.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

GMS We Care!
GMS We Care!

On October 14, GMS went to the opera!  Or rather, the opera went to GMS!  Cincinnati Opera offers their outbound program called "The Essentials," that introduces important opera masterpieces to students in grades 6-12.  GMS has a rich cultural foundation in the arts and the Cincinnati Opera has been part of our enrichment for several years including performances of Bizet's Carmen, Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, Gilbert and Sullivan's The Pirates of Penzance and this year's Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro.
Providing live performance opportunities is essential in educating the whole person. The staff and administration at Gray values these benefits by offering the opera, school band concerts, choir recitals, and plays, plus other outside professional work for our students to experience.

Twenty-seven, GMS Spanish I 8th graders, and their teacher, Senor Garcia recently attended the annual Day of the Death pre-celebration at Northern Kentucky University offered through the University's office of Latino Programs and Services celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations. The students listened to a presentation, watched a video and participated in different activities related to the Mexican celebration "Day of the Dead".
