 ELEMENTARY
Learning about Force and Motion
Florence Elementary School Fourth grade students designed, constructed, and tested roller coasters made out of pipe instillation to demonstrate the knowledge that they gained in science about force and motion. The goal of the project was to further the students understanding of how potential and kinetic energy work together to allow objects, such as a roller coaster car, move along a track. Students collaborated in small groups and discussed how their roller coaster could be designed and constructed based on the specific requirements for their roller coaster - one loop, one hill, and one turn. Based on the above criteria the students were to design the fastest roller coaster with 100% success.
Florence Elementary American Indian Project
The fifth graders at Florence Elementary relived the days of the American Indians. The students were required to research a dwelling either by tribe or region, create a model of the dwelling and for extra credit dress the part of their Indian tribe. Several of Kentucky tribes included the Iroquois, Cherokee, Shawnee, and Chickasaw which came to life with the projects. The showcase of projects demonstrated the time and effort that went into the planning from their home to the way of life in those days with gardens, fire pits, and drying skin hides.
To continue the study on the American Indians, William Behringer - Crawford Museum loaned Florence Elementary the Museum in a Suitcase containing many artifacts from the early 19th century from the Iroquois tribe. The contents of the suitcase were revealed one piece at a time. The students had to name the items and its purpose before being told the correct usage. |
