SCHOOL BOARD NOTES
Break The Mold Award
Amy Kelly of the Cooper Cluster is the September 2015 BREAK THE MOLD WINNER! Amy was nominated by Cooper High School Instructional Coach, Butch Hamm, and Cooper High School Principal, Michael Wilson. She has been teaching for 32 years and is considered one of the best classroom instructors by both her students and her peers. She has a way of motivating students to be successful that is not limited to the classroom. Mrs. Kelly encourages her students to be successful in life and to be civic minded. For example, last year Mrs. Kelly's fifth period class won a school wide pantry food drive with 1300 items collected in a week. When Amy is not teaching, she is volunteering or helping her family as the primary care-giver to her dad and her mother-in-law. Another remarkable thing about Mrs. Kelly is her recovery from a debilitating disease. In 2005, she had to learn to walk and talk again before returning to the classroom. Through her drive and determination, she bounced back into what she calls "her second teaching career" with even more energy and enthusiasm than before. Congratulations, Mrs. Kelly!

School Board recognizes GO Pantry's efforts
GO PANTRY provides food to Boone County children who do not have enough to eat at home. All of the children they help with GO BOXES (summer food boxes) and GO BAGS (weekend food packs delivered during the school year) are referred to the program by the Family Resource Center Coordinator or Guidance Counselor at their schools. For reasons identified by the school, the children they help with the GO BOXES and GO BAGS do not receive the food they need on the days that school is not open. During the school year these children receive breakfast and lunch during the school day. When school is not in session, many of them do not eat. GO PANTRY, with the help of the community, is stepping up to provide food for these children during the times they are not in school. The Board recognized the following for their support of our students through their work with GO PANTRY: Beth McIntire, Laura Dumancic and Katie Hiatt.
Chick-fil-A check presentation to School Board
This past summer supporters of the Boone County School district turned out in a big way on July 27, 2015 to help us win the "Stuff the Bus" competition sponsored by the Florence Chick-fil-a. It's a friendly competition between Boone County and Kenton County Schools to stuff each district's bus with school supplies for children in need in each district. Boone County Schools has won the competition for the fourth straight year. Because this is a joint effort between Boone and Kenton Counties, we are sharing the proceeds with Kenton County. Owner/operator of Chick-fil-a Florence, Dustin DiChiara presented a check to the school board.

 HIGH SCHOOL
Boone County High
The Boone County High School Library sponsored a visit by award winning author Barry Lyga to BCHS today. Lyga's book I HUNT KILLERS won the Bluegrass (Kentucky Student Choice) Award in 2014.
Lyga's writes about people who are considered outcasts in society. He says he has empathy for those who do not fit in. He understands why high school students are drawn to his books. "As a high school student, kids are trying to figure out who they are and are under pressure to conform as well as an equal and competing pressure to differentiate themselves," says Lyga.
Select students participated in student sessions led by Mr. Lyga on Life and Literature and a writing workshop. A group of students wrote their own creative pieces or drew pictures of characters from his books to present to Mr. Lyga that were influenced by Lyga's work. In return he gave them personally autographed copies of his first book "I Hunt Killers." The students were also treated to lunch with Mr. Lyga.
