Just What is a Makerspace?
A Makerspace is a place where kids and adults can come to create, invent and learn. There are tools such as computers, 3D printers, electronics, software and hardware, craft making supplies and so much more to allow your imagination to run wild.
Makerspaces are all about STEAM -- Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math to prepare our students for the jobs of the future. Students graduating High School and College with these talents are what employers are looking for. Makerspaces combine manufacturing equipment, education, and community for the purposes of enabling students and adults to design, prototype and create manufactured works that wouldn't be possible to create with the resources available to individuals working alone. Boone County Schools was well on its way to creating a Makerspace but the students jump started the idea by asking the Northern Kentucky community for help.
It all started with this letter sent to the Leadership Northern Kentucky Class of 2015 from the Boone County Schools Brainy Bots and Junior Brainy Bots. Read the students' letter by clicking here. The students all knew what they wanted and how it should look. They even drew up their own floor plans. Boone County Schools had an unused modern building with six nice sized rooms. There is a Robotics room, an Engineering room, a Design Thinking room, a Make Your Own room an Audio room and a Video room. The students also produced a video to show us and the world their dream for the future. Press the arrow below and enjoy!
