Break The Mold

Lisa Brewington, a 7th grade Math teacher at Gray Middle School is the January 2015

BREAK THE MOLD Winner.  Mrs. Brewington is an "outside the box" teacher when it comes to teaching math. A passerby once witnessed Mrs. Brewington's class working on math problems while Kenny Loggin's Footloose was playing in the classroom. This person says they watched as she yelled the word 'SWITCH' and the class got up and moved one seat over in a snake-like pattern with the exception of one student. That student was at the end of the snake and needed to go to the head of the snake. To do so he had to dance all the way to his new seat. When a student is not doing well in class she comes up with creative ways to help. In one instance she invited the students' parents to a spaghetti dinner to discuss her expectations of the student to the parents. Because she cares so much about her students' success, Mrs. Brewington is considered authentic by everyone who knows her creative teaching methods.

This year the Fourth Grade Service Learning Project is providing "welcome" bags supplying everyday essentials for the women and children that are housed at The Welcome House Center.

The Welcome House Center and Florence Elementary have been partnering together for several years.  Throughout the year the Welcome House Center, located in Covington, provides a home like atmosphere and assists families to help them get back on their feet while going through difficult times.  When a family has exhausted all their resources the shelter diligently works to place all family members at a temporary site between the Welcome House Center, for woman and children, Fairhaven for men, and the Brighton Center who works with children.

Jennifer Amos, Development Coordinator at the Welcome House Center  of Northern Kentucky, spoke to the fourth grade students before the project to enlighten them about the center and answer questions about how they service their clients, like helping them find a place to live and a job.  She told them when a family arrives at the shelter all their belongings are in a bag.  The students were then asked what they would put in their bag.  The response was food, water, warm clothes and shoes, Legos, lap top, and hair accessories.   Most residences do not pack the essentials like hygiene products - tooth paste, deodorant, soap, shampoo, razors or even dish soap, paper towels and toilet paper.

The fourth graders opened this need to the entire school encouraging each grade level to bring in a particular item.
The students decorated bags donated by Remke Market, one of our community partners, and added personal drawings, uplifting letters, poems, and stories to brighten their day and give them hope.  When Jennifer picked up the collected items it filled a cart and her vehicle.  Now when a family arrives at the Welcome House Center, they  can provide a personal bag filled with basic needs with the help of Florence Elementary.

Congratulations to Sam Johnson from Boone County High for making it to the finals for the Cincinnati Overture Scholarship Competition.  Sam is one of only 4 students that advanced to finals in the category of Theater.  He is guaranteed a scholarship of $1000 but could earn a scholarship of $4,000 if he wins the competition.  This is a great accomplishment up against some very stiff competition.  Click here to learn more about the Overture Awards. Your school district is rooting for you Sam!

Students do you need help applying for a scholarship?

There are too many scholarships that are never awarded because potential recipients are either not aware of them or don't know how to apply for them.

The Interact Club of Boone County is inviting all students who are interested in learning more about applying for scholarships to attend its 7p.m.  January 27th meeting at Scheben library. Please bring all your questions and enjoy the evening as a guest of the Interact Club.

Interact of Boone County is a community-based youth service group open to all persons ages 12 thru 18 in Northern Kentucky and sponsored by the Florence Rotary Club.  Its meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesday evenings of each month, year round at Scheben library in Union. There is NO charge for this event; however, seating is limited, therefore reservations are required. Please contact Barbara Rahn, Interact Advisor to reserve your space (859)663-8984.
