This week we celebrate public education and honor individuals within your child's school who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality education. American Education week was first celebrated in 1921 and has been held every year the week before Thanksgiving. American Education Week is designed to recognize the professionalism and commitment of educators and appreciate parents and community members who work toward quality public schools for every student.

This year's 18th annual OASIS collaboration between the Kentucky School Boards Association and the Kentucky School Public Relations Association represents two opportunities: measuring the effectiveness of those communication bridges and earning acknowledgement of especially successful efforts.

Boone County Schools Observe Veterans Day

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors people who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, also known as veterans. It is a federal holiday that is observed on November 11. It coincides with other holidays such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which are celebrated in other parts of the world and also mark the anniversary of the end of World War I.

Why November 11th?  On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 an armistice between Germany and the Allied nations came into effect.  In 1954 Armistice Day evolved into what we now call Veterans Day.

Interesting gramatical point: While the holiday is commonly printed as Veteran's Day or Veterans' Day in calendars and advertisements (spellings that are grammatically acceptable), the United States government has declared that the attributive (no apostrophe) rather than the possessive case is the official spelling.

While  Federal Government offices are closed each year on Veterans Day, state and local governments, schools and businesses have flexibility on whether to close or not.  In the Boone County School District we choose to mark the occasion with special student led assemblies.  We asked our local veterans to participate in our observances throughout our schools.  Many veterans from the Air Force, Army, Marines and Navy turned out.  Please enjoy the following video and pictures.
