Good News Items:

 

Break The Mold

    

 

Victoria Yeomanson - AP English at Cooper High School is the October 2014 BREAK THE MOLD Winner.  She was nominated by Cooper's Instructional Coach Durell "Butch" Hamm.  Mr. Hamm writes Mrs. Yeomanson is one of the most distinguished teachers at Cooper High.  "What makes Vicky such an excellent teacher is her ability to entertain students while teaching Advanced Placement-English.  We have students wanting to take her class because they hear that her classes are 'fun and you learn a lot.' Her students are right.  Her class is unbelievably filled with high energy, enthusiasm, and engagement.  Her students achieve on average 20 points higher than the national average on the AP exam."

 

 

  

Doug Logan - Sons of the American Revolution's National American History Teacher of the Year
Ockerman Middle School American History Teacher has been named Sons of the American Revolution's National American History Teacher of the Year.  Assistant Principal Patrick Berry, also a former history teacher says Mr. Logan has a passion for making sure his students appreciate the American story.  Mr. Logan will be the guest speaker at the SAR's national congress in Louisville next year.  He has also been asked to be a consultant for teacher training at the Sons of the American Revolution Center for Advancing America's heritage on Museum Row in Louisville.

The Sportsmanship Award,  sponsored by First Financial Bank, is presented to a seserving High School student who has demonstrated outstanding school spirit and leadership.  The following are the selection criteria.
* All four students have demonstrated outstanding school spirit and leadership
* Each works hard in the classroom
* Each sets the standard for good sportsmanship, demonstrating unselfishness and fair play at all times.
* Each is an excellent ambassador for his/her individual school, as well as for the entire district. 

 

 

 

Recognizing 20 years of service: 

 

 

  

 

Board member and chair Karen Byrd was recognized at the board meeting for her 20 years of service on the Boone County School Board.  The Boone County High School Choir sang a song for her.  The R.A. Jones Middle School Jazz Band performed a song for her, and Collins Elementary Students presented Mrs. Byrd with a box of Thank you cards. Mrs. Byrd's sons attended all three schools and are Boone County Alumni.  Chairwoman Byrd was also presented with proclamations from the Kentucky School Board Association (KSBA) and both the City of Florence and Mayor Diane Whalen and Boone County Judge Executive Gary Moore.  Thursday October 9th was proclaimed Karen Byrd Day in Boone County by Judge Executive Moore!  Mrs. Byrd didn't know about the recognition planned for her and said she was surprised and humbled. Her family was in attendence for the recognition.

 

 

  

The Boone County Businessmen's Association presented a check to the Board of Education for 44-hundred dollars.  The money is from the summer Golf Outing that raises money for Boone County Schools Alternative Services.

  

 

 

  

 

 

 

 

 
  
  
ELEMENTARY: Celebration of Innovation 

 

 

Boone County Schools held it's annual Celebration of Innovation luncheon this week.  This event showcases the outstanding innovative experiences our schools are offering to students preparing them for the future. Every school in the district put their Design Thinking, from Project Based Learning to S.T.E.M.  Science, Technology, Engineering and Math lab work on display at every table. Channel 5's Courtis Fuller emceed the event.  Below is a sampling of Elementary School pictures from the event put on by the Boone County Education Foundation.

 Boone County Schools: Top 10% in Kentucky! 

 Boone County Schools, the third largest school district in the Commonwealth of Kentucky, is celebrating the results of the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress. K-PREP was administered in the spring of this year and released this month by the Kentucky Department of Education. The results show that Boone County Schools continue to be classified as a Distinguished district and in the top 10% of all districts in the Commonwealth.  Click here to learn more.

 October is National Bullying Prevention Awareness Month. In recognition of the efforts to improve school climate and reduce rates of bullying nationwide, the Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention (FPBP) are proud to release a variety of resources aimed at informing youth, those who work with youth, members of the media, parents, and schools.
