Karen Byrd-Boone County School Board Chairperson

Celebrating 20 years of service

to Boone County Schools

Politician she is not!  Karen Byrd, Chairwoman of the Boone County School board, is a mother of two who cares deeply about her community and the children in it who will shape our future.   She is also a staunch supporter of Public Education.  As she puts it, "how the school system goes is how your community goes."

The Byrd family moved into Northern Kentucky from Tennessee more than 20 years ago.   Karen, her husband and family settled into Boone County after researching which Northern Kentucky county had the best school system.  Boone County was the winner, as it is now.

After enrolling her children, Mrs. Byrd became very involved in the Boone County School system.  Her sons are now alumni of the Boone County School District having attended Collins Elementary, R.A. Jones Middle and Boone County High SchoolClick here to read full article.

Judge Jeff Smith came to Kelly Elementary to speak to 5th graders about the Judicial Branch of government. He conducted a mock trial, and he even chose a judge and let them wear his robe!  The students learned about the branches of government as well as the levels of government. He encouraged them to stay in school, and explained to them how long he went to college to achieve his goals.

Hey y'all New Haven Elementary students kicked up their heels and had some fun on Kentucky Kids Day (KKD) on September 25th.  This year was a "Hoedown" theme, so the students dressed in their best jeans, boots, flannel, hats and overalls. The school was decorated with pumpkins, haystacks and scarecrows.  Rosie Red from the Cincinnati Reds, mascot "Paws" and the Menchie's Frozen Yogurt mascot were dancing to bluegrass music in the bus loop as  the kids arrived.   The kids received  a snow cone at recess, LED red flashing New Haven Bracelet to wear on spirit day and a goodie bag to take home.  Kentucky PTA Kids' Day is one day just for our students. The goal is to send the message to each child that he or she is a special and unique individual who is respected and loved.

The goal is to mobilize schools and communities not only to promote the value of good attendance but also to take concrete steps toward reducing chronic absence.

Camp Ernst Middle School Spanish Teacher Alaina Post will be  traveling to Texas for the 2014 Annual Convention and World Language Expo in November.  This year's theme: Reaching Global Competence. Mrs. Post will be presenting at the Expo.  Her presentation includes teaching other language teachers unique and engaging ways to incorporate the interculturality standards into world language courses like she does at Camp Ernst.  Mrs. Post says, "when students think of Spanish class they think Mexico because that's what they are exposed to the most."  She wants them to learn that there are so many other spanish speaking cultures in the world.  Her 7th and 8th graders are studying Argentina, the cultural differences in the language, music, dance, clothing, food and geography.

In the pictures above students are doing an Argentine folk dance.

Mrs. Post designed her project-based Curriculum from what she learned at Kentucky's Next Generation Academy for the Integration of the Arts and World Languages.

A red carpet was rolled out for 250 guests at The Royal Prom held at Crossroads in Florence last month. It was the VIP of Proms.  Many businesses, churches and individuals donated $15,000 in goods and services so all the details of a real prom and party  could be held for teens and adults with disabilities who have been denied so many times in life. Several students from Boone County Schools attended The Royal Prom.

Here's a look at the video from The Royal Prom.
