Superintendent's Student Advisory Council first 2014-2015 meeting

The first meeting of the Superintendent's Student Advisory Council met this week led by Cooper High's Sam Gormley as the Student School Board Representative. New and returning student representatives from Boone County Elementary, Middle and High Schools discussed Student Advisory Council expectations as representatives from their schools and learned what it means to be a consensus builder in their council role. They broke up into their individual clusters (Boone, Conner, Cooper and Ryle) for a short discussion and played the game "Never have I ever..." to get to know one another better.

September is National Attendance Month The National Attendance Month campaign focuses on importance of attendance. A recent study shows that students who miss more school than their peers consistently score lower on standardized tests, regardless of their age, demographic group or where they live. September is National Attendance Month, a nationwide event recognizing the connection between school attendance and academic achievement. The goal is to mobilize schools and communities not only to promote the value of good attendance but also to take concrete steps toward reducing chronic absence. In Kentucky, High Attendance Day is Thursday, September 18 and the Kentucky Directors of Pupil Personnel will be rewarding those districts with the highest percentage of students at school that day.

ELEMENTARY NEWS Disability Awareness Assembly at Goodridge Elementary

Goodridge Elementary held an assembly on disability awareness. Topics of discussion included making good choices and learning to make the best out of what could be a difficult and life altering situation. Students and staff were so inspired they wanted to participate in a wheelchair basketball game against the Skoolaid All-Stars - Jacob Counts and Ian Smith who put on the assembly. This exposure allowed students and staff to learn to be more knowledgeable, compassionate and understanding of those around us with disabilities.

They are focusing on academic, service, social and personal goals. Here you see their unique art on display at the Boone County Board of Education District Office. Pictured are KES Art Teacher Ms. Hall, and 5th grade students Chase Pattison and Addie Long.

Longbranch Elementary takes the Ice Bucket Challenge Big Time!
| Longbranch Ice Bucket Challenge for ALS and Autism Speaks |
Nearly 40 staffers from Longbranch Elementary participated. The crowd was too large for a bucket so they improvised with a back hoe dumping ice water. Principal Erika Bowles nearly missed getting dumped on but click the video to see how one of her staffers handles that and who gets challenged next. The group raised $350 for both ALS and Autism Speaks! Florence Elementary is holding a Salsa 5k Run/Walk to support the school STEM program, After School program and New Technology. The run will be held at Idewild Park in Burlington, KY. Click here for information on registration or call Nathaniel Cheeks at 859.282.2610. |
