ELEMENTARY NEWS Student makes reading history at Florence Elementary
Kayla Gibson, a fifth grader, was declared the highest achieving Accelerated Reader in the history of Florence Elementary. Kayla had a vision to out-read, out-test, and out-score everyone starting with her second grade class. Then she wanted to be the top reader for each grade level. Now, as a fifth grader, her vision/goal has been reached. She has become the top reader in the history of AR. She achieved this goal with 644.7 points and maintained a testing percentage of 90%. Kayla went over and beyond the highest score of 563.9 points. One of her strategies to accomplishing this amazing feat was working with the librarian both at school and the public library, introducing new book series that were age appropriate. She received a trophy and a pillow that lights up for all of her late nights reading starting in middle school, then high school, and 'oh yeah' college. Placed upon her head was a pair of jumbo brightly colored sunglasses because of her bright future, to use while reading outside and to wear at the Florence Aquatic Center (for which she received a pass). Dream big and pursue your dreams, you only fail when you stop trying. All of Florence Elementary along with parents and family members came together for Field Day, a day of fun and physical activity on June 2nd. A total of 17 stations were set up both inside and outside the school. Students rotated to each station around the building. The primary students were first to start off the day and the older students ended the day. The students participated and enjoyed activities such as, scooter races, bounce house jumping, inflatable slide, jump rope, corn hole toss, hula hoop, team building challenges, water related games and many, many more activities.
Kindergartners promoted to 1st Grade at Florence Elementary. Stephens Elementary presents... "Coloring Outside The Lines" is a production of Stephens Elementary Principal James Detwiler and Drama Teacher Chad Caddell. It's a two part series of conversations aired on BAM radio network centered around leadership and the arts. Part one of two interviews on innovation and creativity. Part two on inspiration. You'll remember Principal Detwiler and Mr. Caddell are the two creative talents behind the Snowhemian Rhapsody that woke students and parents of Stephens Elementary last winter telling them school was canceled due to snow. That video received more than 2 million hits on YouTube! |
MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS Stretching the Attention Span Do you rememeber health class? Did you fall asleep during class? Today's teachers are thinking outside the BOX in an attempt to keep their students attention during class. One such teacher at RA Jones Middle School threw out what we think of as a traditional classroom and restructured. Jennifer Hickey, a former student at RA Jones now teaches a non-traditional Health Education class at RA Jones Middle because she remembers the days of being bored in class. So with the help of funds from the PEP Grant she redesigned her classroom environment. Instead of chairs students sit on stability balls designed for seating with wheels. Instead of desks students sit at height adjustable tables that allow them flexibility in movement and reinforce proper posture while sitting or standing. Ms. Hickey prefers student engagement/involvment activities over a typical class lecture.

On this day the subject matter was Coping With Anxiety. Ms. Hickey explains to the students what anxiety is and how to recognize it within themselves. Then she teaches them relaxation techniques they can use at times of high anxiety like during test time.

This unique restructuring of the classroom was made possible because of the Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) which provides grants to initiate, expand, or enhance physical education programs, including after-school programs, for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Projects must be designed to help students meet its State's and/or National physical education standards by undertaking instruction in healthy eating habits, good nutrition and physical fitness activities.
