School Board Notes
Break the Mold Kathy Gerth, 5th grade science at Mann Elementary, is the May 2014 BREAK THE MOLD Winner. Her nominator, Principal Connie Crigger says Mrs. Gerth goes the extra mile to make sure her children are learning invaluable lessons. Mrs. Gerth teaches 5th grade Science and Language Arts. Her science classroom is a discovery zone and at times an experiment lab. Mrs. Gerth has gone as far as making her husband go fishing to catch her 30 fish so she could freeze them and use them for a "science painting project." Principal Crigger says she loves it when kids tell stories of what cool things they did in Mrs. Gerth's science class. If science is a child's least favorite subject, by the time they've had Mrs. Gerth teach it, it becomes their favorite subject. The Boone County Board of Education established the Boone County Schools' Parent Power Award to recognize involved parents. Those parents have had a significant impact on the advancement, growth and development of BooneCounty Schools. Their engagement and involvement directly impacts their child or other children. Superintendent's Student Advisory Council
Student leaders from Elementary, Middle and High Schools were invited to hold their culminating leadership activity and meeting at Master Provisions. Master Provisions connects resources to people in need. It operates the food outreach program from its Borland Family Distribution Center in Florence. The program receives large-scale donations from wholesalers and other distributors. On this day student volunteers from the Student Advisory Council sorted and divided the food into quantities that area non-profits can manage in their facilities. The students learned about what happens to other items donated like old clothes...some being sent to underprivileged countries where the clothing is resold...some clothing is recycled into new material to make things like blankets. The most important thing students learned is about the value of volunteering. MASTER PROVISIONS' partners include soup kitchens, schools, shelters, and neighborhood food pantries, all of which are accessible by people who need food assistance. The program is now the second largest food bank provider in the region and serves well over 30,000 hungry people each month through its non-profit partners, who are not charged any administrative or product fees.
