ELEMENTARY NEWS

TED Ed Club gets underway at New Haven Elementary.  In it's fourth week TED Ed Club is a 13 week pilot session very new to Northern Kentucky.  The signature activity of TED-Ed Club is students sharing, debating and discussing the ideas presented in TED TAlks and TED-Ed lessons.  These students will learn to develop and present their own big ideas based on their own passions.  One third grader will be dissecting a frog as part of her project.  Students will gain skills in storytelling/storyboarding, production and creating visuals that communicate their ideas clearly.

Read Across America at Florence Elementary.  First grade teacher Mrs. Vita Speagle's first grade class participated in Read Across America and set a goal to read 100 Accelerated Reader books.  That means each student in  her class had to read at least four books, comprehend them and test with accuracy.  The class read only 81 books but their  testing average was an amazing 95%.   To make it fun and easy the students were allowed to come to school in their jammies with a stuffed friend in tow.  They spent the day reading and taking AR tests.  And as a special treat they watched a movie about Dr. Seuss' life.

Target in partnership with First Book gives Florence Elementary The Books for Schools Award for $500 in books for their library.   It's part of Target's national giving plan to reach $1 billion for education by the end of 2015.

Yealey and Florence Elementary together benefitted from a Jersey Mike's grand opening fundraiser.  The new sub shop on Vandercar Way near Walmart in Florence held a five day fundraiser in February offering a free sub for $1.00.  When all was said and done more than $2,000 was split between the two schools.
