Cooper Cluster Hosts EdCamp Boone

It's billed as the unconference conference.  You come to host or join a conversation.  It was so easy, you either wrote down a topic you wanted to talk about or you signed up on a list about something someone else was going to talk about.  Just professional conversations, no presentations and no powerpoints.  Each session was a half hour long.  About 200 educators from Boone and surrounding counties came to Cooper High Saturday to particpate.  Click here to get an idea of a typical EdCamp schedule.

"It was so cold," said one student from Cooper High School, "but I knew I would be going home to a warm bath and a warm place to sleep. I cannot imagine sleeping out in that weather." Read Article

Congratulatory and Good News Items:

Congratulations to Longbranch Elementary School Counselor Stephanie Stambaugh.  The Kentucky School Counselor Association has named Stephanie Elementary Kentucky Counselor of the year 2014.   Stephanie says she hopes this honor will shed light on the role of counselors as being more student centered moving away from the paperwork.  She hopes this will lead to future discussions about changes counselors would like to see to their roles.  She tells her students her main goal is to make sure they are safe so they feel free to learn.

Look who cheered their way to becoming National Champions of their division
Congrats to the ladies of Conner High!  They are also the Grand National Champions over all of the school category including colleges.  This accomplishment has earned them a paid trip to Virginia Beach in May to compete in the U.S. Finals.  Go Cougars!

Can you spell S-O-L-E-M-N-I-T-Y?
13-year-old Olivia Kaiser of Conner Middle School did and won the Kentucky-Indiana 9 On Your Side Regional Spelling Bee this past weekend.  "I kept saying, 'I've got to leave, I can't do this," she said.  "I didn't think I was going to get very far because studying the words was really hard so I'm really happy that I won."  And we are too Olivia! Congratulations.

  Keep The Conversation Going

The fourth and final Community Conversation is this Thursday, February 27th, 2014.  It will be held at Cooper High School from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  Parents, educators, community members and businesses are all invited to help determine Boone County Schools 5-Year Strategic Plan. We want to hear your suggestions about expanding critical thinking, communication and collaboration opportunities for all of our students.  Your input on the future of education is vital, please put this on your calendar and we look forward to seeing you there. Evite
