School Closings or Delays due to Wind Chill

The National Weather Service (NWS) can issue two types of Wind Chill conditions.  Wind Chill Advisory or Wind Chill Warning.  A Wind Chill Advisory as defined by the NWS is Wind Chills between -20 and -34 degrees and at least a 4 mph wind for 3 hours or more.  A Wind Chill Warning as defined by the NWS is Wind Chills -35 and below with at least a 4 mph wind for 3 hours or more.
When the NWS issues a Wind Chill Warning for Boone County for the time the school day begins, we will make a decision to close schools.  This decision will have to be made in the morning of the day in question because wind conditions for the next day cannot be accurately predicted the night before.  If there is a Wind Chill Advisory for the county, schools will likely be open unless there are operational issues with the bus fleet or mechanical issues with the school buildings.

Let's Talk!

Moms and Dads, students, teachers and neighbors...let's talk.  You're invited to a Community Conversation to tell us what you want to see in the future with education in Boone County.  It takes a community effort to make sure our children are career, college and life ready.  We want to hear your thoughts and suggestions about expanding critical thinking, communication and collaboration opportunities for our middle and high school students.

Your opinion is vital to the future of the district.  Please join us for this facilitated Community Conversation.  The first Community Conversation will be this Thursday, January 30th at Ryle High School from 6-8 p.m.  Light refreshments will be served.  See you then!

Bring Your Own Technology...to class!

Traditional classroom instruction is undergoing a transformation with the implementation of BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) at Longbranch Elementary School.  Longbranch Elementary is the first school in the Boone County School District to start the initiative.  BYOT is not a new concept.  It's been implemented successfully in school systems throughout the country.
BYOT was first introduced to fifth graders at Longbranch this school year, 2013-2014.  Before they could bring their own devices (tablets, ipods and cell phones with wifi connection) they had to go through a training process that included skills in netiquette (appropriate ways to communicate online as well as strategies for ensuring internet safety).  The students were then issued what's called a "digital passport" or an identification badge that shows they are authorized for BYOT. Read more...
