Boone County Schools named AP Honor Roll District Again!

The College Board is announcing the 4th Annual AP District Honor Roll - a list of 477 districts across the U.S. and Canada being honored for increasing access to AP® course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP Exams. Reaching these goals indicates that these districts are successfully identifying motivated, academically prepared students who are likely to benefit from rigorous AP course work.

We recognize that improvement in AP results typically takes sustained effort; therefore the AP District Award is based on examination of three years of AP data: 2011, 2012, and 2013 data from all students who took AP Examinations in May of those years. Within the three-year analysis, inclusion on the honor roll list is based on the following criteria:

  • Increase participation/access to AP by at least 4 percent in large districts, at least 6 percent in medium districts, and at least 11 percent in small districts
  • Increase or maintain the percentage of exams taken by African American, Hispanic/Latino, and American Indian/Alaska Native students
  • Improve performance levels when comparing the percentage of students in 2013 scoring a 3 or higher to those in 2011, unless the district has already attained a performance level at which more than 70 percent of its AP students are scoring a 3 or higher

Boone County School District receives readiness grant

At a time when school systems across the country are stepping up efforts to educate the "total child," five school districts have been awarded grants of $25,000 each to expand learning opportunities and enhance college and career readiness. The grants will provide the districts with funds to build partnerships, capacity and structures to offer more and more varied learning opportunities to their students.
The five districts chosen to receive the grants include:
*       District of Columbia Public Schools (Washington, D.C.);
*       Boone County Schools (Florence, KY.);
*       Jefferson County Public Schools (Louisville, KY);
*       Goochland County Public Schools (VA) in partnership with Richmond Public Schools (VA);
*       Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools (TN).

Two Boone County Schools students place in the Adopt-a-Highway Poster Contest

"The purpose of the contest is to increase environmental awareness among children," Transportation Secretary Mike Hancock said. "We hope to educate our young people about the damaging effects of litter, and to change attitudes and behaviors about littering."

The 1st place poster for the 6-8 age category is seen here and was submitted by Tena Reed of Kelly Elementary!

Jessica Dunham - Cooper High School - placed 3rd in the 15-17 age category and has placed all four years in the High School division.

Out of the 170 schools in the District 6 area, seventeen participated in the contest.  A big shout out to Williamstown Independent School, Randall Cooper High School, Caywood Elementary, Kelly Elementary, Carlisle Elementary, St. Joseph School - Crescent Springs, Summit View, St. Joseph Academy - Walton, Newport High School, Community Christian Academy, Southside Elementary, AJ Lindeman Elementary, St. Therese School, St. Cecilia School, St. Anthony School, Carroll County Middle School and Grandview Elementary.  They combined for 481 of the 1,340 entries in this year's contest.  Yes, District 6 rocked it!

Boone County Schools well represented in the 14th District PTA Reflections

Reflections is a cultural arts program that was established by National PTA in 1968. This arts program is open to any student through a local PTA/PTSA in good standing as of October 15 of each year.  Students, grades P-12, may submit entries in six categories: literature, musical composition, photography, visual arts, dance choreography, and film production. Students may submit an entry in any (or all) category (categories).  Reflections entries are judged at the local level, the district level, then at the state level. Kentucky PTA winning entries are sent to National PTA. Kentucky has had National winners for several years.
Of the almost 100 awards given the following winners are from Boone County Schools.
