Kentucky High School Art Educator of the Year

Cooper High School's very own, Sarah Nestheide, was recently named Kentucky High School Art educator of the Year. The honor was awarded during the Kentucky Art Education Association's Conference held in Louisville. Additionally, Sarah has been nominated for National High School Art Educator of the Year which will be named at the National Conference in New Orleans March of 2014.
With approximately 1,100 art teachers in the state of Kentucky, winning this award is an incredible honor and demonstrates the high quality of art education Sarah Nestheide provides her students every day. Currently in her 11th year working in Boone County Schools, and sixth year at Cooper High School, Sarah teaches art to grades 9-12. She builds upon the foundation for her students to practice creativity, develop critical thinking skills and be inspired by art for years to come.

Congratulations, Sarah!

Stephen Elementary's Julie Pile in Education Week

Julie Pile is a GCIPL (Governor's Commonwealth Institute for Parent Leadership) graduate of the class of 2012. She is currently working on her project with GCIPL Fellow Partner, Felicia Anderson. Their project is called Side by Side and encompasses training parents and community members to be writing mentors to third grade students. Julie is currently serving in her second year as President of the Stephens Elementary PTA in the Boone County Schools.

GCIPL is six days of intensive training for parents who want to be engaged partners with their school(s). "I first learned about GCIPL from a friend who was currently attending the training and she told me that I "had" to do it. Little did I know how that one conversation would be the start of opening the doors to opportunities of engagement that as a parent I would never have thought was possible." Julie Pile

GCIPL trains parents to be effective advocates within the educational system, working with teachers, other parents, and school administrators to improve student performance. Parents are trained in leadership and advocacy skills in a series of three, two-day intensive workshops.
Participants are exposed to a range of information and data, including academic achievement scores, for the school with which they are involved. The aim is to increase their understanding of the information available and to gain familiarity with how it can be used to improve the educational process. Participants also get formal training in organizing meetings and recruiting other parents to participate. In addition, the program tries to develop a spirit of volunteerism among participants and encourages them to seek positions on school boards and other advisory groups in their districts. Parents who have been trained by GCIPL play a vital role in our schools.
