LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL Boone County

Each October, 1 million Americans and thousands of communities nationwide celebrate Lights On Afterschool to shine a light on the afterschool programs that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families.

Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates thousands of media clippings each year.

Boone County will participate again this year in the Lights On Afterschool celebration. This year the Boone County Event will take place on October 17, 6:00-8:00 pm at the YMCA's CAMP ERNST. The event will include vendors providing resources for parents and families about their before/after school and extended time services.

Kentucky Kids Day

New Haven Elementary students kicked up their heels and had some fun on Kentucky Kids Day (KKD) September 26th. This year was a "Hoedown" theme, so the students dressed in their best jeans, boots, flannel, hats and overalls. The school was decorated with pumpkins, haystacks and scarecrows. The students arrived in the bus loop to the mascot "Paws" and the Menchie's Frozen Yogurt mascot dancing to bluegrass music. The kids received a snow cone in a New Haven mood cup, bookmark and a goodie bag to take home. Kentucky PTA Kids' Day is one day just for our students. The goal is to send the message to each child that he or she is a special and unique individual who is respected and loved.
