Sacred Heart School Newsletter

Year 2012-13 - May 3, 2013

JMJ

Dear Parents and Friends of Sacred Heart,

"This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you."
John 15:12

I am sitting at my desk around 3:05 and in comes to my office three 8th graders-then three more-and another six. They pack themselves around my desk. "Well hello-why are you all here?" I ask. "Prayer," they respond. I realize that it only takes one person to make the end of the day prayer and announcements-they know this too. So, I ask, "Do all twelve of you want to speak today." "Oh, no, Mrs. Engen, we're just here to support each other." "Oh, I see", my quick response as I smile and shake my head.

This gathering at the end of the day has become habit in the last few weeks. As I continue to tend to my business, the 8th graders look around my office for fun quotes, reminisce about the day, laugh about things they did in 2nd grade, 4th grade...yesterday. It's magic to see these young people coming to the end of their 8th grade year in this way-just wanting to be together. They have passed through beginning and middles of their time together and are now rushing to the finish line of their Sacred Heart education. What is the story we want these young people to remember most from our school?

Test scores show that they are prepared academically to be successful in high school. Our staff is sure about that. However, we don't have numeric data to verify what is most important...that these young people know how much they have been personally loved. We hope that each 8th grader can speak to this truth. We also pray that they are full of hope and have come to realize that our Lord is, and will continue to be, with them all the days of their lives.

God bless them as they receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Sunday, May 5th.

In the Triumph of God's Great Love,

Maureen Engen

Position:

I am the middle school Science teacher.

Background:

I grew up in Prairie Village and attended Bishop Miege High School. I played soccer at the collegiate level for Emporia State University while earning my BS in Biology. Following graduation from ESU, I worked for a small, privately held Biotech company located on the Plaza. After working there for four years, I earned my teaching certificate and got a job teaching Math and Science at Our Lady of Unity catholic grade school in KCK.

Family:

I have been married to my husband, Bruce for two and a half years. We have two dogs, Bossco and Hawk.

Parish:

I recently became a member of Sacred Heart parish. My previous parish was Queen of the Holy Rosary located in Overland Park, and it was my home parish growing up as I attended grade school there.

Hobbies and Interests:

I really enjoy playing soccer and try to get on the field as much as possible. I also enjoy taking pictures and scrapbooking in my spare time.

Sacred Heart reflection:

I feel so incredibly blessed to be part of such a welcoming, loving community. I have had a great first year at Sacred Heart and I am so thankful to be a member of such a great staff!

The School Library has an Amazing Problem!

We have 300 new amazing books awaiting processing in order to go on the shelves and be available to our  students. The overall process is very time consuming but can be broken into  small steps.

  • Can you give 1-hour a week and help move these amazing books through one of the steps and into  the hands of our children?

Our amazing processing station is open all day every  school day and can accommodate several amazing workers at a  time.

Training will be provided.

No special skills necessary just your  willingness.  You'll be amazed how easy it  is!  Our amazing students are  very grateful for your help!
