JMJ
Dear Sacred Heart family and friends,
Easter blessings to you from the staff at Sacred Heart School!
Fourth quarter in any school is always a busy time. It is a reflective time, as well.
Teachers are diligent about staying focused on good instruction so that students master the outcomes and are ready for the next year. Students are taking Kansas assessment tests, practicing learned skills, and comfortable in the classrooms that have become secure places where they can pray, play and excel with their classmates.
Our April and May calendars have several special events that lend themselves to community involvement. We look forward to sharing these times with you:
- First Communion on April 20th
- Brown Bottle on April 27th
- May Crowning on May 3rd
- Confirmation on May 5th
- Rosary on Tuesday's during the month of May:
May 7th @ 2:30 p.m.
May 14th @ 1:40 p.m.
May 21st @ 9:45 a.m.
- All School Masses during April and May (all begin at 8:15 a.m.):
Fridays: April 5th, 12th, 19th, May 3rd, 10th 17th
Wed: April 24th
Tues: May 21st
We are grateful for Sacred Heart parish school where children thrive spiritually, academically, emotionally, and physically. Truly, it is a life-giving place for children to receive their education. We are open to welcoming new families. If you know someone who has even the slightest curiosity to understand more about our school, please have them call me for a personal visit and tour. I would be most appreciative for your help in recruiting new families into our beloved school!
Bless you, good parents, for your continued support.
In the Triumph of God's Great Love.

Faculty Spotlight
Miss Liz Brown
Position:
I'm in my sixth year of teaching at Sacred Heart. I spent the first five years in third grade, and this year brought me to teach middle school literature.
Background:
I grew up in Indianapolis and moved to Overland Park during my junior year in high school. I liked Kansas so much that I went to KU to get my undergraduate degree in elementary education with a minor in early childhood special education. KU was great. Rock chalk! Eventually I went on to completing my master's degree in school leadership through Benedictine College. Go Ravens!
Family:
My parents live in Memphis, Tennessee, and my brothers are currently both in KC. My older brother and his wife will move to Chicago this June so Matt can finish a fellowship in adolescent psychiatry. I'm so excited to say that I'll be getting a new family member next May when I marry my fiancé, Andrew! Life is good!
Parish:
Guardian Angels in Westport
Hobbies and Interests:
I love swimming, boats, oceans, and water in general. I also enjoy a nice walk to the plaza or Brookside. My fiancé is a chef, so although I'm a LEARNER, I've enjoyed getting to know my way around the kitchen.
Sacred Heart Reflection:
Thinking about our school makes me smile. I can remember being blown away by the generosity and community I felt my first year from teachers, students, and school families. I continue to see that each day! |
Virtus Site has new sessions scheduled!! Please sign up today if you are interested in volunteering for School, SOR, Youth Groups, Totus Tuus, or any other children's ministry programs at www.virtus.org. You must register online. Anyone 16 years and older is required to attend one of these sessions prior to volunteering. Current Training Scheduled: Protecting God's Children for Adults |

SACRED HEART BROWN
BOTTLE, SATURDAY APRIL 27TH
Sacred Heart Families:
Yes, it is that time a year again for the planning of our 43rd Brown Bottle Dinner and Auction that will take place on Saturday, April 27, 2013 in our Parish Multi Purpose Center and School.
Wanted to mention a few dates to mark on your calendars!
- Volunteer meeting scheduled for Wednesday Jan 23rd @ 7PM in Parish Church Meeting Room 1.
- Dinner Ticket Sales TBD. Tickets will also be available for sale after all Masses starting the weekend of April 6th-7th. Tickets are $40/each for general reserved seating and $500/table for 8.
- Donations for this year's event need to be turned in by Friday, April 12th.
SCHOOL PROJECTS:
I need your help! We are looking for coordinators/ volunteers to help with the school classroom projects this year. Michele Hall and Debbie Feldman that have coordinated the projects for the past few years will not be able to facilitate for BB 2013. If you would be interested, please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated. These masterpieces are created by our Sacred Heart students and are displayed both on the Live and Silent Auction for our parents/grandparents to purchase. These pieces of art by our school children are precious and have been large items for our Auction!
DONATIONS:
We are also looking for donations for both our Live and Silent Auction. All items that are donated are new or handcrafted that will be auctioned off the night of the event. You can also make a monetary donation that we can purchase an item on behalf of your family. Our Live Auction usually consists of 50-60 items from trips, group activities, outdoor lawn equipment, electronics, front row pews for Christmas Eve/Easter Sunday Masses, your own reserved parking spot for a year, camping equipment packages, concerts, appliances, handcrafted items, sport activities, an adorable puppy that needs a home, and the traditional "Money Jar" to give you some idea of what we have had in the past.
Our Silent auction takes place in our school classrooms that are themed such as "Home & Garden" "Sports" "Kid's Corner" "Just For You" "Wine & Dine" and "Everything Else." For example for "Home and Garden" it could be home décor, appliances, vacuum cleaner, garden tools, wheel barrow, lawn sprinklers, lawn or garden décor, patio furniture, garden benches, hanging flower baskets, trees, to gift cards to a favorite nursery, carpet cleaning, lawn care services, gift cards/certificates to Lowe's, Wal-Mart, Target etc. If you don't have your item purchased yet, please provide a description of your item in preparation of the printing of the auction book for that night's activities. You can drop them off at the Parish School office, Parish Church offices, BB information table after weekend masses or call me and I will make arrangements for pickup.
Donated items of $50 value or more, family names will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win a $500 Tuition Voucher to Sacred Heart School for the 2013-2014 school term. (For each $50 donated, your name is entered; so if you purchase a $250 item, your name is entered 5 times).
So if you have any interest in helping out with Brown Bottle, donating an item or need further information, EMAIL brown.bottle@shoj.org.
I want to thank all of you for making our Brown Bottle event such a great success. I know many of you help throughout the event and our committee could not do it without your continued support.
Again, thank you.

Totus Tuus (totally yours)
comes to Sacred Heart June 9-14!!!
A summer vacation Catholic school
formerly VBS, but much more Catholic!
We are thrilled to announce that Totus Tuus (totally yours), a summer vacation Catholic school, is coming to Sacred Heart the week of June 9-14, 2013! The 2013 curriculum is "The Seven Sacraments and the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary." A trained team of college catechists and seminarians on fire with the Holy Spirit will be helping bless our Year of Faith with this beautiful gift to our young disciples.
We are currently in need of a coordinator to help facilitate and implement this ministry on our campus. Our on-line sign-ups will be available soon. In addition, an electronic volunteer sign-up opportunity for parents and high school students that are Virtus trained will be organized soon which asks volunteers to assist in small ways such as organizing the participants, distributing snacks and overseeing lunch.
Children going into grades K-12 will be eligible to participate in this ministry. Grades K-6 will meet from 9:00a.m. - 3:00p.m. each day while 7-8 and 9-12 will meet from 6:00p.m. - 9:00p.m. each day. Each age appropriate session includes a variety of educational, social and recreational activities designed to let our youth have fun while they learn, pray and enjoy a little silliness together!
Contact Kathleen Whalen at 913.669.0306 if you are interested in our coordinator role or email Kathleen.whalen@shoj.org.

Recycle
Support our parish school and reduce pollution!
"He is not here; he is risen!" As we prepare for the renewal of the Easter season, let us also do a little "spring cleaning" and give worn-out items a chance at a new life.
We recycle used cell phones, GPS, mp3 players, and printer cartridges (ink jet or laser). Drop your donations at the school office or in the green box on the table in the school's front entrance. No copy-toner cartridges, please. Consider collecting from your workplace, as well as your home.
Your "green" donation will reduce landfill waste, and help us earn points toward items for Sacred Heart School.
