A letter from the supervisor...

Dear Discovery Club Parents and Guardians,

As the end of the school year draws to a close, I'd like to thank all of the students, parents, grandparents, guardians and others for being part of the Discovery Club family. Your participation in our program is important to us.

The 2013-14 school year will be one of big change for Saint Paul Public Schools, especially at the elementary and middle school level. It is an exciting time as we enter the final year of implementation for the Strong Schools Strong Communities strategic plan.

This fall Discovery Club will expand from the current 12 sites to 16 in order to offer our program across the city. We will use a tool called YPQA (Youth Program Quality Assessment) to review and identify programming and staff training needs.

As always, your family will experience much of the same in our program: staff who enjoy working with students and families, activities that engage your children in a variety of learning activities and a commitment to providing this service to support working parents.

Thank you and I wish you a great end of the school year and summer!

Jill Cacy, Discovery Club Supervisor

Service Learning at EXPO

Service Learning at EXPO
EXPO Discovery Club held a "Day of Service" in February. The kids made 50 blankets for Project Home, 30 hygiene bags and 50 snack bags for the Dorothy Day Center, bookmarks for the EXPO library, 2,134 grains of rice on FreeRice.com, Valentine place mats for Meals on Wheels and our biggest project 300 sandwiches for The Sandwich Project, which are brought to area homeless shelters. The kids did a great job and really felt they made a contribution!

Learning 50 Nifty States

50 Nifty States
The children at Nokomis have been studying the USA. It all started when we sang the song, "50 Nifty United States". We then started collecting postcards from our families and friends with the goal of collecting postcards from all 50 states! As the postcards come in we post them on a map. We are also playing USA trivia, choosing a state and reading facts about the state, so kids can guess which state it is. We are learning capital cities by listening along with a hip hop song. Our next project is making flags for each state and finding out what the symbols represent.

Read Across America Day

Read Across America
For Read Across America day (which is also Dr. Suess's birthday) J.J. Hill Discovery Club held a giant read-along session during the school day with our Pre-Kindergarten and older kids all together.
