What are 21st Century Community Learning Centers?

Lights On Afterschool
Welcome to the first edition of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21CCLC) newsletter! 21CCLC offer a variety of free after school programs for all students during the two hours just following the school day. You may know these programs better as SOARing Eagles, Panther Extended Program (PEP), Eastside Kidzone, Scots After School, Staying Cool After School, Murray After School, RAM Club and 5-10 at Washington. Our programs support student success and strengthen skills in career exploration, academics, leadership training, technology, athletics, the arts, and more!

Students Create a Class

When two Murray Middle School students recently requested a Minecraft Club for their after school program, the site coordinator suggested they present the suggestion in a creative way. They wrote an essay stating what Minecraft is, why Murray should have a club, how the class would be run and how it can help students grow. The students then convinced 20 students and a teacher to get behind their idea and now almost 30 students take part in Minecraft Club! The students have come up with themes and topics to work on each week. This project is a great example of how 21CCLC after school programs create an environment where students can achieve above and beyond.

Now We're Cooking!

Cooking
On December 17, 12 students graduated from Ramsey's first 'Cooking Matters' course (a collaboration with the University of MN). During six weeks, students learned the basics of cooking, good nutrition, and wise shopping practices. They learned one recipe each week and took home food to prepare the recipe for their families. The final class had a cooking competition, judged by a local chef and school staff, as well as a graduation ceremony. Students received their own cook book, measuring cups, a cutting mat and a certificate.
