In a cooperative agreement with the City of Newport Beach, UCI's Campus Recreation department will now serve as the provider of year-round boating programs at Marina Park, the City of Newport Beach's brand new boating and recreation facility. On Saturday Dec. 5th, UCI Campus Recreation was an integral part of the planning and execution of the grand opening celebration for the facility. Marina Park is centrally based in Newport Harbor and will be the new home of UCI's boating programs. UCI's department of Campus Recreation conducts sailing, kayaking and stand up paddle boarding classes, as well as overseeing the UCI Sailing team as part of the Club Sports program. Marina Park is located between 15th & 18th on the Newport peninsula, and encompasses a 10.5 acre site which includes a community center, sailing center, caf, park and marina. With this larger facility comes the opportunity for expanded classes and hours, as well as internship and job opportunities for UCI students. Certified members of the UCI Sailing Association will have access to boats through a boat check-out program. This partnership shines the spotlight on UCI and its storied history on local waters, while UCI gains recognition for running a world class boating program for not only the UCI community but surrounding neighbors as well. It will also allow UCI to utilize new high-performance boats and the latest in Stand Up Paddleboard and kayak gear.
