The Changing Face of Transportation

Hello KYSITE!

Did you know that November 6 is "Marooned without a Compass Day".  We didn't either.  But we all know now.

According to Merriam Webster, to be "marooned" is to be put ashore on a desolate island or coast and leave to one's fate OR to place or leave in isolation or without hope of ready escape.  So, if you didn't have a compass, what would you do? It's something to talk about at the dinner table tonight.

And just when you think that we couldn't have found a worse topic, just know that November 6 is Saxophone Day and we could have highlighted that instead.  But if you're into that, check out 2:10 of this video for a great saxophone solo.

See you next week at the Annual Meeting!

New AASHTO Informational Tool Updates Transportation Revenue Options

By: Lloyd D. Brown, AASHTO Journal

WASHINGTON - While public officials continue to discuss ways to fund a new surface transportation authorization, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials has updated its popular matrix of revenue generating options with new easy-to-understand graphics. The revenue matrix produced prior to MAP-21 enactment in 2012 was incorporated into AASHTO's reauthorization policy resolutions and white papers adopted by the AASHTO Board of Directors in October 2013. AASHTO has also produced a brief descriptive video highlighting the key features of this dynamic new funding information tool.

"The AASHTO Board of Directors is strongly united in its desire for Congress to identify long-term and sustainable funding to shore up the struggling Highway Trust Fund," said Bud Wright, AASHTO executive director. "However, AASHTO's board - which is made up of 52 transportation department chiefs from all the states plus D.C. and Puerto Rico - does not recommend any single approach over others. We do, however, absolutely remain committed to continue assisting Congress in identifying and implementing a revenue solution based on Congressional leadership and 'the art of the possible.' "

The full article and link to the matrix can be found here.

Most Beautiful Streets in the World

The last installment of The Most Beautiful Streets in the World is Rue Cremieux, in Paris, France.

Rue Cremieux in the 12th Arrondissement of Paris, France.

Opened in 1865, the Rue Cremieux was named for Adolphe Cremieux, a 19th-century attorney and politician. Located near the Gare de Lyon in Paris, the street is lined with colorful houses, some of which have paintings of plants and animals on their walls, says Over Blog.

Do You Remember This?:  Office Space Part 6

This week's Office Space quote from Peter:

''It's not just about me and my dream of doing nothing. It's about all of us. I don't know what happened to me at that hypnotherapist and, I don't know, maybe it was just shock and it's wearing off now, but when I saw that fat man keel over and die - Michael, we don't have a lot of time on this earth! We weren't meant to spend it this way. Human beings were not meant to sit in little cubicles staring at computer screens all day, filling out useless forms and listening to eight different bosses drone on about mission statements.'' -Peter
Have You Seen That?

This week, we feature a video of 20 inventions we shouldn't live without.  Well, probably not completely accurate, but there are a couple of nifty ideas.
