The Changing Face of Transportation

Greetings!

Hello KYSITE!

Happy World Penguin Day!

 penguin_crossing

You did know that it was World Penguin Day, right?  We thought about postponing the newsletter by a week as we were worried that too many people would be taking off work to celebrate.

To celebrate, you can:

  • Go to the zoo or aquarium
  • Wear a tuxedo.  At a minimum, wear black and white.
  • Watch March of the Penguins or Happy Feet
  • Tell a penguin joke such as:
    • Q: Where do penguins keep their money?
      A: In a snow bank!
    • Q: What do penguins sing on a birthday?
A: Freeze a jolly good fellow.

That being said, let's roll along with what this newsletter includes:

  • SDITE 2013: Full Re-cap
  • SDITE Award Winner from KYSITE
  • KYSITE Golf Registration is Open
  • KYSITE Safety Corner
  • Increasing Alternative Transportation
  • Transportation Superlatives: Amazing Roads IV
  • Weird Signs
  • Quick Hits
  • Kentucky Derby Odds
  • Have You Seen This?

Let us know if you need anything from KYSITE!

SDITE 2013: Full Re-Cap

Approximately 11 members of the Kentucky Section attended the 2013 Southern District ITE Annual Meeting in Charlotte, NC on April 7 - 10, 2013.  This is the same meeting that was held in Lexington in April 2012.

 checkered crosswalk

Some highlights:

Overall: The Charlotte Local Arrangements Committee did a wonderful job hosting 560 registrants, which is believed to be a SDITE record.  From the Welcome Reception on Sunday to the Annual Banquet on Tuesday night, the level of attention to detail and subsequent execution was flawless.  Also, all had a great time at the ABD Event on Monday night at the NASCAR Hall of Fame and Buffalo Wild Wings.  Finally, kudos to the LAC's "Make it Funner" committee which added some more fun to the meeting.tour

Roll Call: For those familiar with the tradition, each Section is asked to participate in a roll call at the Opening Session where each Section expresses their excitement to be at the meeting.  The Kentucky Section is famous (well, infamous) for our roll call and this year was no letdown.  This involved perfecting a live Harlem Shake before the dance fades into obsecurity. While video has not surfaced to date, we suspect that we'll soon have images of Bill Seymour cutting loose in the aisle.

 traffic bowl 2013

Traffic Bowl:  The University of Kentuky put up a great effort, but unfortunately did not advance to the finals of the Traffic Bowl Challenge.   We'd like to recognize Misty Brown, Alex Flores, Audrey Knaub and Bobby Lehman (alternate) for their participation and preparation in this competition.

Board Representation: Many of you aren't aware of some of the roles that our members play at the District level.  This includes:

- Bill Seymour (HDR) is the current Secretary/Treasurer of SDITE.

- Eric Green (KTC) is the chair of the Technical Knowledge Committee for SDITE Strategic Plan initiatives

- Scott Walker (Parsons Brinckerhoff) is the Kentucky Section Representative to the SDITE Board

Photos:  Some photos of the meeting have been posted on our website.

Conclusion:  The meeting was awesome, but it was no Lexington!

Award Announcement!

Lindsay_Award_2013

At the SDITE Annual Banquet on Tuesday night (April 9), one of our own was selected for a District Award.  Congratulations to Lindsay Walker (Parsons Brinckerhoff) for being selected for the Joseph M. Thomas Outstanding Young Member Award.  Lindsay has served both the Kentucky Section and the Southern District in multiple capacities for several years.

Feel free to congratulate Lindsay if you have a minute.

 razr plus car

AT&T recently commissioned an independent survey of American drivers and found the following:

- 49% of drivers admitted to texting and driving.  This is compared to three years ago when 60% of drivers said they never texted while driving.  This is VERY "ominous trend" that is going to continue!

- 98% of drivers said they knew texting while driving was not safe !

- 40% of those admitting to texting while driving said it was a HABIT

Please drive safe everyone!

Ways To Increase Alternative Transportation
By: Billy Garrison (GRW)

Transportation is becoming more expensive. Many people are under the impression that their car is the only viable form of transportation. A group in Sante Fe has been brainstorming ways to change this perception and convince people to use public transportation and/or bikes. To read their thoughts, click here.

Transportation Superlatives
By: Anne Warnick (Parsons Brinckerhoff)

Up this week is #12 on the Weather Channel's 15 most amazing roads list. This week's road takes us to the fjords of Norway. All images and descriptions all come straight from weather.com.

The World's 15 Most Amazing Roads

#12: Atlantic Road, Norway

Nestled along the stretch of coastline known as the Hustadvika in the Western Fjords of Norway, the Atlantic Road is famed for its panoramic views of the islands between the towns of Kristiansund and Molde, where whales and seals can be spotted from the viewing points on the five-mile-long highway.

The road rises and falls with the contours of the land in many places, and can become perilous when the weather turns stormy, sending waves crashing onto the highway.

2013 Kentucky Derby
Orb_Derby

Here are the current odds for contenders of the 139th running of the Kentucky Derby (favorites in red).

Black Onyx  50/1

Charming Kitten  70/1

Code West  110/1

Falling Sky  65/1

Frac Daddy  45/1

Golden Soul  150/1

Goldencents  9/2

Govenor Charlie  35/1

Itsmyluckyday  12/1

Javas War  18/1

Lines Of Battle  30/1

Mylute  30/1

Normandy Invasion  7/1

Orb  9/2

Overanalyze  18/1

Oxbow  24/1

Palace Malice  18/1

Revolutionary  6/1

Super Ninety Nine  80/1

Title Contender  150/1

Titletown Five  80/1

Tiz A Minister  80/1

Verrazano  7/2

Vyjack  10/1

Will Take Charge  22/1

Winning Cause  50/1

Some quick thoughts:

- Overanalyze seems appropriate for a bunch of engineers

- Conversely, Will Take Charge isn't appropriate for enginners (who are stereotyped as introverted)

- Orb (is that Ohio River Bridges? -- thanks to co-worker Aaron Detjen for that one)

- Lines of Battle, Normandy Invasion, Javas War, and Revolutionary seem pretty patriotic / warlike

- Golden Soul and Title Contender would have nice payouts

- I can't see Titletown Five being approprite in Louisville.  If it were Titletown Three, that would fit better.  But it would not come close to Titletown Eight (that would be Lexington).

Editor's Note:  The Kentucky Section of ITE offers no official knowledge of horse racing.  Therefore, we are no liable for using this information except for some minor entertainment.  Please be responsible whether you are gambling or enjoying some Mint Juleps.  And most importantly, have fun (and feel free to share your winnings with your editor).

Have You Seen This?

Are you a fan of the movie The Shining?  For me, the two little girls in the hallway freak me out a bit too much.  So, what happens when you selectively edit the movie to make it look like a romantic flick?  Check it out:
