Spring/Summer 2013

Tumacookery sidewalk sale in full swing
Bonanza Days 2013, held on April 16 & 17 was a great success!
There were lots of visitors in Tubac both days. Local businesses reported better than average sales, record sales in some cases.

There were tables and racks outdoors, sale items in the shops and a festive atmosphere throughout. Several of our merchants hosted local nonprofit organizations: Koorey Creations featured Santa Cruz Humane Society, Rogoway Gallery had Equine Voices in front of their space complementing the beautiful equine photography and sculpture inside. K. Newby was home to Paws Patrol and Tumacookery held a bake sale for a children's cancer fund.

All event fees went directly into advertising. There was a full page ad in the Villager, a double-sided color flyer inserted into the Green Valley News, ads in Sahuarita Sun, GV News, Santa Cruz Valley Sun and Nogales International. Of course there was a new, brightly colored banner at the entrance announcing the event! This was year one and it will only get better in the future. Thanks to everyone who participated and a special thanks for Karin Wade (Tumacookery) and Celeste Wisdom for their exceptional help in making this event happen.

Welcome to Hozhoni...
Located in the former Chile Pepper
Coffee -  Ice Cream - Bookstore.
22 Tubac Road.

The Tubac Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, April 19  to commemorate the opening of new Tubac business, Hozhoni, owned by Phyllis Durden and Jody Jones.

Phyllis's past experience as an Antique Shop Owner, financial planner and school administrator led her to once again open her own business. "The first time we visited the area we felt magic, the uplifting of our spirits," Phyllis said. "After experiencing Tubac's out-of-the box environment and meeting the locals, we knew this is where we wanted to be."

Hozhoni is a relaxing and friendly gathering place focused on nourishing the mind, body and spirit. Enjoy delicious organic free trade coffees, teas, Mexican chocolate drinks and gourmet ice cream while perusing the award winning selection of Southwest books for adults and children.

Hozhoni is open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 5pm and on Sunday from 11am to 5 PM.

If you are a new business, member of the Tubac Chamber and would like to have a ribbon cutting ceremony, please send us your press release and let us know when you would like to schedule it. We will bring the ribbon, the scissors and take the photos. Email [email protected]

Tubac Chamber Board Meetings - A Change

The Tubac Chamber of Commerce board has changed its bylaws regarding the frequency of board meetings. While the working meetings, known as Study Sessions, will continue to be held monthly. the public board meetings will go from once a month to quarterly. The goal is to have meetings with greater depth of content, provide more interest for our members and encourage attendance. We will be presenting plans for the year, have guest speakers and hold the meetings in more inviting locations with refreshments! Meetings will take place in April, July, October and the annual meeting and election in January.

The Tubac Golf Resort will graciously host the next meeting on Wednesday, July 17 at 9 AM. An agenda will be posted to our website in advance of the the meeting. You are all invited to attend.

Other Changes:

April Hargrave (Feminine Mystique Gallery) has resigned from the Chamber board. April felt she had too many other obligations and could not fulfill her role as a board member. We are sorry to see her go. April has been a great volunteer, both at the 4th of July celebration and the festival. We look forward to continuing to work with her in her volunteer role.

Phyliss Durden of Hozhoni (see article above), was next in line to hold a seat on the board and she has kindly accepted that position. We welcome Phyllis to the Chamber Board. She is already a great addition and has enthusiastically signed up for the events committee.
Festival Committee

The Chamber has a newly formed ad hoc festival committee working on continuing to make the festival the best it can be for the village and the visiting artists. The committee is chaired by board member, Karon Leigh and consists of Brent Land, Lincoln Wilson, Leigh Morrison, Patti Todd (VP Chamber board) and staff members Angela Kirkner & Terri Wheeler.

The Committee has been meeting for a month and has set both short and long term goals and objectives including increasing the quality and quantity of the applicant pool, improving net revenue, providing vendor hospitality and reaching new audiences.

For any of you who have not yet renewed your Chamber membership please make sure you do it soon so your business description is included on back of the 2013-14 map (email or call us and we'll bring an application to you). We will be working on the maps during the summer. This year all map ads will also be in full color. Take advantage of this great marketing opportunity offered only to Chamber members.
