Update on UAVs
Volume 3 #9: September2012
Greetings!

Each month, we bring you a few news stories that illustrate how aerial data acquisition (ADA) services enhanced, or could have enhanced, an organization's ability to achieve its goals, with a specific focus on events in your industry.

A new feature this month is an "Update on UAVs," which brings a variety of news stories reporting on the technology and status of the FAA's acceptance of these aircraft in the national airspace, a topic of particular interest in these markets.

Our goal is to share information with you about how ADA services offer significant benefit and value when implemented in a timely manner and as part of your organization's overall operational strategy.

If you find an example that relates to your organization's mission, please call to discuss how we can begin to establish a plan that addresses your aerial imagery needs.

Thanks for your continued interest.

HOMELAND SECURITY IN THE NEWS

Ships that have called on ports in Yemen face security restrictions in U.S., Government Security News, 9/4/12. "The U.S. Coast Guard has announced that, effective Sept. 18, vessels that have visited a port in Yemen during its last five port calls cannot visit the United States unless they comply with certain tighter security measures. As such, Yemen becomes the sixteenth nation facing such restrictions on their entry into the U.S., says a Federal Register notice published by the Coast Guard on Sept. 4." More ...

LAW ENFORCEMENT IN THE NEWS
BANGOR, ME--Man killed self days before he was to testify about pot farm, Bangor Daily News, 9/28/12. "The massive pot plantation was found after a tip was left on the Maine State Police Troop J website, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a press release issued Monday. When police flew a plane over the site, people on the ground set fire to several buildings being used as dormitories before the suspected growers fled. When the marijuana operation was discovered, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency officials characterized the size, scope and detail of the operation as quite surprising. They said the plants - many of them 8 feet tall and highly cultivated - were of extremely high quality. More ...

"Are You Ready for Civilian Drones?", Emergency Management Magazine, 8/30/12. "Commercial and civilian drones are already here - even if they're not supposed to be." More ...

Police chiefs adopt drone code of conduct, The Washington Times, 8/16/12. "The nation's police chiefs have adopted a code of conduct for their use of drones, including letting any images captured by unmanned aerial vehicles, or UAVs, be open to inspection by the public, and that the images not be stored unless they are evidence of a crime or part of an ongoing investigation." More ...

Manned planes beating drones as the more capable tool in war on drugs, Homeland Security Newswire, 8/10/12. "In the never-ending war on drugs, U.S. Navy planes are showing that technology does not necessarily mean improvement, as manned planes are outmaneuvering unmanned drones in catching cocaine smugglers traveling by sea; in 2011 the manned planes caught an average of $30 million of cocaine per day, and during the last five years they have detected more than 853,000 pounds of cocaine." CBP's Predator UAV Use Raises More Questions, Answers Elusive,  Security Debrief, 3/22/11. "The AP story broke as I was attending a conference at MIT's Lincoln Labs on Homeland Security technology R&D. Among the fascinating presentations, the one on wide-area surveillance technologies in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill caught my attention.  .. The scientists from Lincoln Labs did an after action analysis that showed the least effective platform for wide area surveillance was a tethered airship (which is logical, given that it was tethered to a specific location.) Close behind in its lack of effectiveness was CBP's Predator UAV. Frankly, I was stunned at this finding." More ...
