Dear Educators,

The month of May signals the approach of summer and for some teachers the end of a school term. For online educators, you don't follow the typical school structure and the summer time means another new term. If you are considering your ongoing professional development this newsletter will help provide you with resources to use now.

What Inspires Your Students?
Many educators I've talked to over the years have described their work as a calling or something they are passionate about doing. They love their work, even if as an adjunct they have a very demanding schedule. A common theme among educators is that they try to inspire their students. One method I use is the development of videos and I've shared my YouTube link below. Send me your examples and I'll share them in an upcoming article.

Develop Substantive Participation Posts

Positive Psychology & Teaching
I've published a book and coined a phrase called Appreciative Andragogy. I have taken Appreciative Inquiry and translated it for use in an online class. Why an online class? Because the need for a new instructional approach is the greatest. But as you'll discover, it can be used in any classroom. More important than that is the phrase Appreciative Inquiry, which educators may not be familiar with yet.

So what is Appreciative Inquiry? It is an organizational development tool that has its roots in positive psychology. This is more than feel good statements and is based in reality. Our students produce work and we evaluate those assignments. It is natural to develop our feedback from a deficit-based approach or start by talking about what is wrong. Appreciative Inquiry changes the approach and starts with strengths - and build from those strengths to address developmental needs. Appreciative Inquiry seeks peak moments and discovers reasons for those moments and draws from those positive attributes.

You can read more about the origin of Appreciative Andragogy and find out how you can use this as a new instructional approach. Read more about it here: The Heart of Appreciative Andragogy: An Innovative Online Teaching Strategy
A New Incentive for the Month of May
This month every person who "likes" the Facebook page created for my book Appreciative Andragogy will be entered into a drawing for a prize that includes a leather bound journal and set of Tul rollerball pens. Click the link below. I provide resources almost daily on this Facebook page that can assist your work as an educator.
