Overcoming the Top Two Career Myths
|
Myth: A resume must only be one page in length.
Why is this a Myth?
Most people tend to sell themselves short when they have a one page resume, especially if they have extensive experience. In contrast, some one page resumes contain too much wording and in an effort to stick to one page the font size shrinks and readability diminishes.
Tip: Don't have page after page of verbose, hard to read paragraphs and instead, use clear and concise, easy to read, well-formatted statements.
Myth: I need an objective statement at the top of my resume.
Why is this a myth?
This takes up valuable space on your resume and your cover letter will indicate what position you are interested in and applying for, which will also prevent you from being locked into a position because you won't have a specific statement on your resume.

Evaluate Your Career and Your Career Goals Part One
|
When you decide it's time to re-evaluate your career and your professional goals it can be overwhelming if you are not sure where to begin or what aspects of your career you want to change, improve, or enhance. Before you begin to search for a new job it is important to develop a plan of action so that you can clarify what you want to accomplish. If you are unable to articulate your goals you will be unsuccessful in your job search because you will not know what direction you are taking and this can influence your conversations with potential employers.
Step One: Examine Your Belief System
The process of self-reflection begins with an examination of your belief systems. Your beliefs may include what you hold as truth about your ability and potential to learn, grow, and adapt. Before you make decisions about your career consider what you believe about yourself, your skills, and potential by answering these questions: What Do You Believe About Yourself Right Now? How Would You Describe Yourself?
Changing a belief system, especially one that has been held for a long period of time, may not happen overnight or within a short period of time. It is the accumulation of positive experiences and meaningful interactions that can change beliefs in the long run. It happens through a conscious process of self-discovery where you learn about your abilities and recognize that you have a capacity to do more. Everyone has an ability to learn and it is our beliefs that either limit or encourage professional growth and development.

Be Ready for a Job Interview with the Right Mindset
|
A successful interview occurs as the result of meaningful interactions, which happens when you are prepared, confident, and self-assured. The process of preparing for a job interview may involve a time of stress, indecision, and self-doubt. It is important to understand the origin of your doubts and fears so that you are fully in control of your thoughts, reactions, and emotions. When you experience fears or doubts, those are often an indicator that you care about your performance, the position, and the company.
Here are some steps to take to recognize and control your thoughts:
- Ask yourself right now: Do you have any fears, concerns, or self-doubts about an upcoming job interview?
- If the answer is yes, ask yourself this question: What is the worst outcome you can imagine will happen?
- Next you can ask yourself this question: If the very worst outcome you can imagine does happen, what will you do?
Fear controls us when it is viewed from a perspective of the unknown. Once you understand the basis of those fears you can begin to prepare for any of the potential outcomes that you have considered.

Educators: Become an Advocate for Your Online Students
|
An online educator has many roles to fulfill for each class. They must provide guided instruction and meaningful feedback, manage and control classroom conditions, and facilitate the learning process. The most important aspect of educating students is meeting their developmental needs. When as an educator most effective with that task? When they develop a mindset that is student centered. That means putting the student first and considering their needs and perspective with every learning activity and interaction. It is an instructional strategy that is both supportive and nurturing.
