From the Director...

Welcome to Spring! Our green hills are alive with Oak Hill students and staff members hiking the trails behind the school and beyond. Even  I have been known to join in. Many of you know that I am "in training" in Autism Spectrum Disorder with my own grandson when I return home from my daily course in Autism-at-Oak Hill. It isn't easy (neither is the hiking) but it is extremely rewarding.  What about grandparents in your family? How can you help them be involved with their grandchild with ASD? A recent article on friendshipcircle.org offered some tips I can share about grandparents. Check out the article by clicking here. You may invite them to your family team meeting or your IEP if you so choose; you may invite them to Oak Hill for a visit, and you can certainly invite them to Stand Up! for Kids with Autism next Friday night. Are they far away? If you let us know their e-mail address, we will put them on the newsletter mailing list. Let's include them in the Oak Hill community.

And what about boosting parent involvement? When asked recently about helping and engaging our parent community optimally, a Board member dad recently suggested supplying more information about iPad applications for our kids. So here's a Friendship Circle Special Needs Apps List. And if you would like to share what YOU need from Oak Hill, please let us know - you can even reply via this newsletter and we'll get it.

Stand Up! for Kids with Autism

This incredibly important event is no longer in a land far far away. It's next week. You will enjoy fine wine, a wonderful meal, stand-up comedy, and a BEAUTIFUL student art gallery. This fundraiser is a celebration of Oak Hill! You will leave feeling inspired. Here are several ways you can help.

  • Come to the event! Choose your sponsorship level below.
Sponsorship Levels/Tickets
  • If you can't come, that's okay; we'll miss you but we still need you.
  • You can buy or sell raffle tickets. Contact Joy for information about raffle tickets. Call 415-457-7601 or email her at jleighton@myoakhill.org.
  • You can send in your donation for the Cash Purse that parents are putting together for the Raffle. Suggested donation is $40 or more; expected purse holdings: $1000.
  • You can volunteer for set-up during the day on Friday March 28th.
  • If you want to come but the ticket is too pricey, call Joy about picking up one of a few sponsor-hosted tickets.
  • If you still want to donate a bottle of good wine for the premium bar, we're open to last minute donations of fine wine.

On Saturday, March 22, Oak Hill will be an exhibitor at the Support for Families of Children with Disabilities Conference.

This is a FREE conference very  relevant for families of children with autism and related neurodevelopmental challenges. The day includes morning and afternoon workshops, an exhibitor fair, free lunch and access to childcare, and more. Check out the list of presentations on their website below. Dr. Sanford Newmark, for example, is a compelling presenter on the subject of integrative approaches to autism treatment that stop short of pharmaceuticals. Perhaps we'll see you there. Walk-ins are welcome.
