Carl shows off summer squash picks
Weather perfection marked the first week of summer's extended session, along with familiar faces in new positions, and one new classroom teacher. The garden is shouting out to us to enjoy its glory and it's bounty. A fledgling little junco flew from it's nursery in the planter in front of the office, after its mom had been entertaining us all week with a chirping dance whenever we walked by. It has been a great start to the new OH year and we're chirping too.

Jessica with her student Caden
We are very happy to introduce our new Willows Teacher, Jessica Grist. Jessica grew up in the Bay Area, earned a degree in linguistics with an education minor from U.C. Berkeley, and continued on to San Francisco State University for a credential and master's degree in Special Education.  She is credentialed to teach moderate to severe students, has had her own class in the San Francisco School District, served there as a resource specialist for the  A.P. Giannini special education department. Her two main professional interests are curricular adaptation and behavior management. We are thrilled to have Jessica on our team.
Jill works with Laurel student, Logan, on color identification

Returning Oak Hill teacher Jill Nakagawa has taken over the Laurel classroom for the summer. Having left last Spring to move closer to her husband's job in the South Bay, we've enticed Jill back to San Anselmo, though she drives to us from San Jose  every day. A credentialed autism specialist, Jill was the teaching assistant in Manzanita last year before we had a classroom opening.

Parents Join us for Back-to-School BBQ

A good number of parents were able to join us Thursday afternoon for a summer barbeque at school during our first summer week. Resident "Q-er" Matt Poynter served up hot dogs, hamburgers and salad, with student- baked cookies and parent-provided apple pie for dessert. Teachers old and new were able to meet up with some of their class parents, always an important opportunity.

Our Garden Delivers
Carl & Malcolm show off the day's harvest

When kids grow and prepare their own garden vegetables, they learn to like them and enjoy cooking with them. Supporting this idea were Carl and Malcolm, overheard discussing who was going to take which vegetables home and what recipes would they use.

Youth and Arts at Oak Hill Online

As you have seen in previous newsletters, the Youth in Arts program brought us Artist Mentors this year in a wonderful multi-media arts education program tailored for 5 of our classrooms. The other two classes participated at Autistry and with Liz McDonough's drama classes. Linked here  is the recent Youth in Arts blog with lots of Oak Hill photos and an explanation of the program goals and philosophy.

Brett Mitchell Moves on This Week

One of our very favorite teachers, Brett Mitchell, will move on from Oak Hill on July 19th. He has been offered the opportunity to design a new special day class at San Rafael High School. Brett let us know back in early spring that he had decided to take up this offer, satisfying his long term commitment to public education. Brett has been a high school sports coach on the side during his time at Oak Hill, and presumably this is a calling he will pursue there as well. We will miss Brett and wish him well.
