We're off for one week. It's a Valentine's vacation, a winter break, and a time to re-energize. It's also Mardi Gras time, "ski week" for some, Hawaii week for others, or just home time doing laundry and taking care of business at home for many grateful teachers. Matt Poynter is bringing the baby to the grandparents in New Jersey; speech therapist Jenny Ripley is going to Thailand! Thanks to parents for taking care of the kids while we're gone.
A big THANK YOU to Lucie Alexander for hosting, and Kindrah Kilgore for helping to arrange the Transition Dinner at Oak Hill on Tuesday night. Over 20 families were represented to join in the discussion and hear Mark Weisman of the Department of Rehabilitation. We will have an updating event sometime in March, and another Dinner, this time at Il Fornaio, in May

Fat Tuesday in Oak Hill East
Kicking off the spring semester course in jazz appreciation, Mike McDonald's class watched Ken Burns' "Jazz" documentary, Episode 1, "Gumbo. After listening to great music, learning about the history of the blues, the birth of jazz, the great city of New Orleans, the food, the whole experience was summed up in these two quotes, one from the video, one from a student:
Wynton Marsalis said,
"You have to have that blues. It's like the roux in a gumbo. If you don't have roux, you don't have gumbo, man - you might have soup, and it might be killin'. But if you don't have that roux, you cannot have no gumbo."
Then Donovan Ash said, "Let's make Gumbo!" After a shopping trip with CJ and Malcolm, and (almost) all day in the kitchen with Donovan in charge, the good times rolled! Engaging Project-Based Learning! | |
