The holidays are upon us. Each class at Oak Hill will participate in preparing a Thanksgiving feast this coming Tuesday. On Wednesday, we begin our Holiday break, returning on Monday the 26th. You will be receiving an invitation by mail to the Transition Discussion Dinner on Thursday the 29th. This event is open to all Oak Hill families, and hosted by OH Board member Lucie Alexander at Piatti Restaurant off Hwy 101 in Mill Valley. There we will provide stories and resources, as well as dinner and shared conversation time, on the subject of preparing ourselves and our students, whatever their current age, for a productive and supported lifespan after Oak Hill. Hear from those who have "been there" and find out what Oak Hill is doing right now and how OH Assistant Teacher and Transition Coordinator Kindrah Kilgore can help you in this process.
Since I have been giving much thought to Transition these days, a recent set of online articles drew my attention from the blog Friendship Circle. The author addressed the issue of chores for kids with special needs, with some whys and some specifics. Learning how to do household chores is a great place to get started in teaching life skills and fostering independence, key goals for our Oak Hill students.
I invite you to check into this resource for parents (link) for an outline of the benefits as well as some specific chore ideas. Here are 9 suggestions that might well be possible in your own home:
- Washing Plants - a designated pitcher with a clear water level mark helps.
- Folding Laundry - might even help with a retail job in the future.
- Replenishing toilet paper supplies - keep a laundry bin container filled with spare rolls ready to do.
- Vacuuming - try starting with powdered carpet deodorizers to vacuum up.
- Garbage duties - bringing in the bins after pick-up might be a good job.
- Emptying the dishwasher - Good practice for matching and sorting (put knives away 1st)
- Making the bed - there are videos available online to start off with and then fade.
- Removing drier lint.
- Hulling strawberries with a strawberry huller gadget, or similar gadgety task.
Have a calm and restful, as well as family-filled, Thanksgiving. Remember to schedule sensory breaks for your kids throughout the day - they're used to them!
