Christmas Tree With Ornaments

Holiday

Trimmings

Can Harm

Pets

Adding to our ho-ho-ho and all that's merry this season are many adornments that can be dangerous to pets. Here are just a few of the holiday trimmings that can hurt your pets.

* Keep pets away from your Christmas tree! If pine needles are ingested, they can puncture holes in a pet's intestine.Pets should not drink the holiday tree water, as tree preservatives can pose risks. The stagnant water can also be a breeding ground for germs.

* Dreaming of a white Christmas with artificial snow? Be aware that snow globes and artifical snow present dangers, and can be toxic. Snow globes, for example, can contain antifreeze which is poisonous for pets.

* You've heard it before but it bears repeating....poinsettias, holly, mistletoe and lillies can create stomach upset, and in some cases, reactions such as nausea, lethargy, vomiting.

* New Year's Eve noises can scare pets, so be wary of loud poppers. Strings of confetti tossed about can also be a hazard.

Moving Fancy Rats

Fancy Rats

Lillie and Lola prove that safe pet travel is not just for dogs and cats

Meet Lillie and Lola, fancy rats that have migrated to South America on an intra-company transfer with their family.

Lillie and Lola are more commonly known as "Fancy Rats" or domesticated brown rats, classified as an "exotic pet." Fancy rats are social, curious and intelligent pets that require very little attention and a whole lot of love and cuddles.

When moving these kinds of pets, it's important to be familiar  with the proper certificates, permits and endorsements that will be required, especially for an international trip. Exotic pets often require a special government import permit, export permit with appropriate government endorsements, a bilingual health certificate, and the green light from the proper government ministry/authorities.

Lillie and Lola had an almost perfect trip to Brazil, if it wasn't for the strike in Guarulhos Airport. Customs clearance took longer than expected but they finally made it to their new home - happy, healthy and very hungry. Here's what their pet parent, D.L., told us, "Thank you for all of your great support throughout the move and hope to be able to work with you again when we head back to the States."

Helping Your Dog's Distress

Does your dog whimper when it's time to hop in a car? Are you concerned about canine car sickness this season? For pet owners whose dogs are distressed by rides with the family, desensitizing techniques can help with your canine's fears.

According to Healthy Pet magazine, some dogs may associate a prior negative experience (car sickness or an accident, for example) with car travel. For other dogs, it might be a case of the nerves. Some common signs of dog distress are crying, pacing, panting, shaking and vomiting.

Desensitizing techniques involve gradually exposing your pet to pleasant car travel. Dr. Karen Overall, a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviors, suggests this method in Healthy Pet,"First your dog learns that it's fun and not distressing to sit next to the car. Then she learns to sit in the car, and rather than something bad happening, she is rewarded with a treat. Remember, dogs can't eat when distressed, so this will give you a gauge of whether your pup is worried. Then she sits in the car with just the engine running, but no movement...When you finally move the car, don't go far...maybe down part of the driveway. The final phase involves going somewhere...Start with short, quiet, smooth trips and work up to longer, noisier and jerkier trips."

This process can take weeks before you successfully restore your pet's positive association with car travel. If you continue to observe your dog's distress, try backing up and repeating earlier steps in the desensitizing process, until you detect progress in your dog's reaction.

FAQs

How will my pets travel?

Most pets that we transport will travel by air. Pets travel on commercial airplanes and will be placed into the pet cabin section of the plane.

The pet cabin is located underneath where the pilot is seated. The air is pressurized and the temperature is slightly cooler than in the passenger cabin. The lights are dimmed which creates a conducive environment for pet comfort. There is a thin mesh lining that goes over your pet's travel carrier, so your pet does not shift during travel.

Millions of pets fly safely each year on commercial planes.

Magnificent Mountain Dogs Arrive in Delhi

We had the pleasure of transporting  these wonderful dogs from Washington, D.C. to Delhi, India. Here's what we heard from the pet parents:

"Varun at WorldCare has been essential in helping my family get our two Bernese mountain dogs into India, and out.

He was very professional, and was at our service to help at any time of day.

When we arrived at 1:00 a.m. at the airport, he was waiting for us with all the paperwork in case of any problems. He was always acting as the middle man between government offices and us, and we rarely had to lift a finger as he did all of the running around for us....As well, he helped my parents import their dog. It was very last minute, and Varun was able to scramble to get the proper paperwork and navigate the waters of Indian Customs.

If all representatives of WorldCare are like Varun then we will continue to always use their company as we travel around the world. Our dogs are like family to us, and Varun made sure that they were always taken care of."
