Horse in Autumn

"There's something about the outside of a horse that's good for the inside of a man."

WorldCare Pet's offices in India recently transported Bella, a wonderful goldendoodle, from New Delhi to her new home in Washington, D.C. This is what her pet parent told us about the experience.  "This service is efficient and straightforward. You were very knowledgeable, collected all the appropriate details and maintained all of the proposed timelines. Your work was excellent!"

WELCOME

The apples are being harvested early in the northeastern United States and the leaves are starting to cascade off the oaks - just as our fall schedules resume.

Yes, we're back from our summer escapades, but could it be that your pet is suffering from post-vacation and back-to-school blues? Check out that report in this issue, along with news of our recent move of a special needs family, and some ways that we helped ease the stress of travel for these pets.

And for those of you making a transition this fall or at the end of the year, read about the immunizations that your cat or dog may need before traveling. Contact us for more details, as immunization requirements vary by country.

If you're relocating, be sure to touch base soon so we can help plan your pet's next move.

Not for Kids Only: Back-to-School Blues In Pets

As kids return to their studies, it may be another member of your family - your pet - that experiences back-to-school blues.  If you've noticed unusual behavior, constant barking, sulking or tearing up household items, if could be a sign that your furry friend is trying to adjust to changes in your family's activities.

According to AFP, "Pets are equally likely to have difficulty adapting to a more constrained lifestyle after weeks of freedom and many of them will develop full-blown cases of back-to-school blues," animal experts say. Experts advise against any form of punishment, and recommend that you keep pets occupied as best as possible during the long work and school day. Some toys can ease the boredom, and veterinarian Celine Moussour told AFP, "I advise hiding biscuits in different rooms for them to find." If your pet's adjustment period feels particularly long, a consultation with a vet may be helpful.

Moving Special Needs Pets

Moves of great distances are certainly arduous for all pets, but special needs pets are particularly vulnerable.

WorldCare Pet recently transported a family of three dogs and a cat from the USA to Australia. This terrific family had pugs, a Maltese Shitzu and an older feline, some with medical issues. The pet parent was rightfully concerned, as we were, about the considerable distance and the health of these animals throughout the long hours of travel. Our senior pet relocation counselor, Lisa, went to work developing a plan to minimize the heightened risk for these pets.

Shipped the kennels in advance

The pets were able to become acclimated to their travel containers in a gradual way. This helped reduce the stress of being in the crate for an extended period of time. Lisa chose slightly larger travel kennels for the pugs, as the larger containers provided better air space around the dogs. The pug is a brachycephalic breed that can experience respiratory issues in flight due to its physical structure.

Incorporated an overnight stay

Some airlines enforce a year-round embargo on snub-nosed pets like pugs. We couldn't schedule a direct, non-stop flight because of the embargo, but we were able to ship them via Air New Zealand, incorporating two rest stops. In Auckland, an overnight stay in quarantine allowed the pets to stretch out in comfort with larger accommodations , before they took the last leg of their journey to Sydney. By choosing the overnight stay instead of same day transit, the dogs enjoyed a helpful rest, as pugs have a harder time adjusting to changes in altitude.

Maintained medications and diet

The pets needed to be kept on their regular diets to avoid stomach upsets. These 10-year old pugs had a number of health concerns. We were able to arrange for the administration of their special medications while in transport in Auckland and in the Australian quarantine. We didn't want them to miss any important doses!

A few suggestions

Lisa recommends, "Be aware of the risks involved with transporting senior pets, snub-nosed pets or pets that have medical conditions. We'll make sure pet parents have the information they need to make informed decisions in the best interest of their pets." She adds, "The complications of moving special needs pets over long distances are substantial, so enlist the help of a pet transport company. We did everything in our power to reduce risk. We're aware of the best routing, what airlines to use, and the preparations involved. We'll work tirelessly to help get your pet to its destination safely."

Pets-on-the-Move FAQs

Please share your questions with us.

What immunizations are often required for cats & dogs traveling overseas?

While immunizations differ for cats and dogs that travel, the primary vaccination required is to protect against rabies. Several countries recognize the three-year rabies vaccination, but require that it is given within the year of the travel. It's very important that you don't allow a rabies vaccination to expire. For pets traveling overseas, the rabies vacination may need to be between 21 and 30 days old at the time of travel. If you anticipate that your pet may be traveling close to the vaccination expiration date, bring your pet to the vet for a booster vaccination.

If your pet is traveling from a rabies endemic country where the incidence of rabies is more common, a blood titre test may be administered to confirm that the rabies antibodies are at an acceptable level.  A waiting period may be needed before travel. For most countries, the blood titre test results do not expire as long as the rabies vaccination never expires.

For pets that will be at a boarding facility before, during, or after their journey, make certain they are up-to-date on FVRCP (Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia) for cats and/or DHPP and Bordatella (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Para-influenza and Kennel Cough) for dogs.

Dogs and Cats in Australia from Miami

REUNITED!

Bonnie, Chez, Bentley & Smirnoff Arrive in Australia

The pet parent of these fabulous four (spotlighted in the adjacent article) shared his thoughts on the big move with us.

"I can't express my gratitude for the excellent service that Lisa and her team showed through this entire process

. . . even up to the day before departing the USA, a medical issue (arose) with one of the kids that was quickly resolved with always the kids' well-being coming first.

To make this big trip from Miami Beach, Florida to Syndney, Australia was a very big decision, especially taking into consideration the age of the kids, and their respective breeds (two 10 year-old pugs, one 5 year-old Maltese Shitzu and a 14 year-old Russian Blue Cat). But while Lisa expressed her professional concerns regarding the pugs flying, Lisa was always supportive and together we worked out a travel itinterary that would assist in this massive trip ...

I will always be indebted to Lisa and her team for the job they did to have the kids make it to Australia . . . Lisa truly has a passion for the job that she carries out, which was evident from the very first call and e-mail we exchanged to the notification that they had landed in Sydney."
