Seventh Sunday of Easter words for thought
It is possible to hear in Jesus' high priestly prayer, a prayer he offered shortly before his death, the petitions of the ascended Lord for his own throughout history-to our day-and beyond. Jesus prays for us. In holy baptism we become believers in God, have our robes washed in the flood of Christ's forgiveness, and receive the gift of life forever with all the saints.

Honor your Mother this Mothers' Day!
This Mothers' Day, honor your mother (or someone else special) by helping mothers in some of the poorest parts of the world have a safe childbirth experience.
Every expectant mother hopes for the safe birth of a healthy newborn, but in many parts of the world safety can be compromised by lack of basic healthcare supplies. In many poor countries most births take place at home attended by local traditional midwives. The midwife has training and knowledge to handle most births, but often does not have the very basic equipment, such as a clean cloth for the mother to lie on, a suitable instrument to cut the umbilical cord, or a towel to dry and wrap the baby. Maternal and infant death due to infection is not uncommon. Some simple supplies can make a huge difference.
The St. Paul Social Ministry Committee is sponsoring our 7th Midwife Kit Project
Together we will create kits that will be sent via Village Help for South Sudan. Through this organization, we have previously supported the Wulang School and the building of a new health clinic. The kits will be used by local midwives to help make deliveries safer and more welcoming for mothers and babies.
There are several ways you can be a part of this important project:
- Make a monetary donation. Every $20 sponsors the making of one kit, shipping, and training local midwives who will use them.
- Make a donation of your time by coming to church on Thursday, June 6th at 7 p.m. to help assemble the kits
- Pray for the mothers and babies who will receive the kits
- Come to Adult Forum on April 28th to meet Ron Moulton, director of Village Help for South Sudan. Ron will give us updates on the school and health clinic, as well as talk about future work in Wulang. When asked about the importance of the midwife kits, Ron recently wrote:
"South Sudan still has the highest infant and maternal mortality rate, girls still get married and bear children too early, and rural areas like Wunlang have the worst statistics. The midwife kits from St. Paul are treasured by the women of Wunlang because they are given directly to them, and we (Village Help for South Sudan) are the only support they receive."
Look for contribution form and further information in upcoming Sunday bulletins.
For more information and additional photos follow this link. The midwife kits pictured here are the kits that were assembled in June 2012. It took nearly a year for them to arrive in Wunlang!

Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program
The Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program at Luther Community Services is seeking to partner with individuals and/or families in the St. Paul Congregation who will open there home to a young person who is leaving the care of the Transition to Independent Living program. There are occasions when a young man is ready for discharge from that program into foster care and who would like to remain in the Arlington Community and, in particular, to finish the academic year in which he is enrolled at Arlington High School. This has been a challenge as we do not have any foster care resources in Arlington. The Unaccompanied Refugee Minors Program would be delighted to come to St. Paul to talk with anyone who may have an interest in or questions about this opportunity to support a young person. Please call Marie Fitzpatrick at our office in Worcester at (339)243-3900 and we would be pleased to speak with you.

Walkathon for Camp Calumet Lutheran
Camp Calumet is very excited about the May 11, 2013 Walkathon! For many years, this event has been the signature "get-ready-for-summer" gathering for so many. The 5-mile walk takes walkers of all ages and abilities through beautiful Gloucester, Massachusetts. Everyone enjoys the sound of roaring waves crashing on the beach, conversation with friends new and old, and a delicious hot dog and hamburger lunch with chips, cookies, and refreshing drinks at the finish line. The whole thing starts with a 9:30 AM registration at Good Harbor Beach, and we start walking at 10 AM.
How can you get involved?
- Join TEAM ST. PAUL and walk the beautiful 5 mile course, much of which is along the shore. This is a FABULOUS activity for all ages. Families welcome!!
- Make a financial contribution to TEAM ST. PAUL. This year, all donations will be matched with Social Ministry Funds, up to $2000.
- Also, watch and listen for "Power Hours" when your donations made following the service will be matched DOUBLE with Social Ministry Funds.
Be sure to stop by the table in the Lower Narthex to sign up as a walker and/or make a donation.
For those of you not familiar with Camp Calumet Lutheran, it is a true gem of the New England Synod, located in the White Mountains of NH on the shores of Lake Ossipee.
St. Paul has always had a strong connection with Camp Calumet. Over the years, many of our children have attended Resident Camp, our older youth have been trained and worked as counselors, many adults in our congregation have worked at Camp Calumet over the summers, our congregation has participated in retreats and members of all ages have enjoyed special times spent in the Family Camping Camp Ground.
Some would say Camp Calumet is one of the most spiritual places on Earth and Lutheran Outdoor Ministries is one of the most positive things that can happen to a child.
For more information about Camp Calumet, visit their website http://www.calumet.org/
For more information regarding Team St. Paul or questions regarding donations please contact Lionel Goulet at qco@QuietCounsel.org or George Wilson at gwilson1@rcn.com
You may be wondering what Camp Calumet does with the funds raised from the Walk a Thon.....We asked Camp Calumet and this is what we found out......the money raised goes into the Annual Fund:
Most all of the Annual Fund gifts go directly to support the cost of a week a camp. $200,000 or so goes to keeping the costs as low as possible (in 2012, we charged $555 for a $640 experience). $80,000 or so was given in support of kids who needed help with that $555. Some kids needed the whole amount, some kids needed $100 of the $555. These grants were given to individuals, urban day camp kids, and block grants.
The Sudanese group, for instance, was awarded a block grant to make camp achievable for those kids.
The rest of the Annual Fund dollars? Well they are used for paint, and a new canoe, and mulch, and cheese for the grilled cheese, and shower curtains, and a new data base system, etc. You know ... all the stuff we need to make sure camp is ready for any guest that arrives.

Congratulations Confirmands!

Thanks to our 2013 Confirmation class who helped lead our service last week as lectors, musicians, and worship assistants. The St. Paul congregation celebrated these wonderful young people as they affirmed their baptisms during our 10:15 AM service. As St. Ignatius of Loyola wrote, "Go forth and set the world on fire."

Pastor Linn Opederbecke - Guest Pastor
Pastor Opederbecke will be serving as St. Paul's guest pastor during the time Pastor Ross Goodman is on sabbatical. On his first Sunday at St. Paul he will be introducing himself at the Adult Forum. This is a great opportunity for us to introduce ourselves and to learn about his history and ministry.
Multi-language Pentecost Celebration
Can you read fluently in a language other than English? If so, please consider participating in our multi-language reading for Pentecost (Sunday, May 19). Contact Vicar Daniel and let him know what language you would like to read in and he will get you the reading written in your language. Thank you for your help!
Noonday Prayer
Our many worries and responsibilities may overwhelm us at times. Sometimes it is nice to hear of God's love for you and reorient your concerns. Some have found an order of prayer to be of some benefit in remembering that we belong to God. Join us for a short, spoken word service every Tuesday at noon beginning on May 14. This service includes the reading of a psalm, Scripture, and prayer.
Morning Prayer
Morning prayer (or Matins) is a great way to start your day by allowing yourself to be centered on God. Morning prayer will be a short service of music, Scripture, and (of course) prayer lasting about 30 minutes. We will meet weekly on Thursdays at 7:00am. Our first service will be May 16 in the sanctuary.
The Liturgy: Origins and Significance
What's the point of worship and where did this stuff come from anyway? Those are the question that will frame St. Paul's upcoming liturgy class. We will be reading Gordon Lathrop's book Central Things (you can purchase this book from Vicar Daniel for $10) and having a Bible study on the various aspects of our liturgy. We will meet monthly from May through August. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, May 21 at 7:00pm-8:30pm. Contact Vicar Daniel if you are interested in attending this class.
Senior Lunch
On Wednesday, May 22 at noon, the St. Paul Seniors will be gathering in the fellowship hall for a brown bag lunch. Bring your own lunch and any other goodies that you would like to share. Coffee, iced tea, and a dessert will be provided.

From the Vicar's Desk
God of Hope, whose Spirit gives light and power to your people, empower us to witness to your name in all nations, to struggle for your own justice against all principalities and powers and to persevere with faith and humour in the tasks that you have given to us. Without you we are powerless. Therefore we cry together: Maranatha, Come Lord Jesus. -"An Invitation to Prayer" at the opening of the fifth assembly of the World Council of Churches, Nairobi, 1975.

Holy Fire Lights Orthodox Easter In Jerusalem's Church Of The Holy SepulchreClose to 10,000 people crowded the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, believed to be the location of Jesus' burial and resurrection. Since the 9th century, Orthodox Christians celebrate the Holy Fire ceremony with a belief that a mysterious 'blue fire' lights a candle held by the Greek Orthodox Patriarch in Jerusalem.
