Sugar Blues
Like heroin, cocaine and caffeine, sugar is an addictive, destructive drug, yet we consume it daily in everything from cigarettes to bread.
-William Duffy, author of Sugar Blues.
The United States is the largest consumer of sweeteners and one of the largest global sugar importers. We started in 1689 when the first sugar refinery was built in New York City. Colonists soon began to sweeten their breakfast porridge with refined sugar, and within 10 years individual consumption had reached 4 pounds a year. The average American now consumes more than 100 pounds of sugar and sweeteners per year. In contrast, Americans consume an average of about 8 pounds of broccoli. The USDA recommends we get no
more than 10 teaspoons per day, yet most Americans eat about 30 teaspoons per day-that's three times the liberal recommended daily value.
Humans love sweet things. Even before we started refining sugar, we sought out foods with sweet tastes. Sugar is a simple carbohydrate that occurs naturally in foods such as grains, beans, vegetables and fruit. When unprocessed, sugar contains a variety of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and proteins. When brown rice or other whole grains are cooked, chewed and digested, the natural carbohydrates break down uniformly into separate glucose molecules. These molecules enter the bloodstream, where they are burned smoothly and evenly, allowing your body to absorb all the good stuff.
Refined table sugar, also called sucrose, is very different. Extracted from either sugar cane or beets, it lacks vitamins, minerals and fiber, and thus requires extra effort from the body to digest. The body must deplete its own store of minerals and enzymes to absorb sucrose properly. Therefore, instead of providing the body with nutrition, it creates deficiency. It enters swiftly into the bloodstream and wreaks havoc on the blood sugar level, first pushing it sky-high-causing excitability, nervous tension and hyperactivity-and then dropping it extremely low-causing fatigue, depression, weariness and exhaustion.High consumption of sugar and the corresponding elevated insulin levels can cause weight gain, bloating, arthritis, migraines, lowered immune function, obesity, cavities, and cardiovascular disease. It can also disrupt absorption of nutrients, possibly leading to osteoporosis, PMS symptoms, and stress.
Health-conscious people are aware that their blood sugar levels fluctuate wildly on a sugar-induced high, but they often don't realize the emotional roller-coaster ride that accompanies this high. We feel happy and energetic for a while and then suddenly, unexplainably, we find ourselves arguing with a friend or lover.
Sugar qualifies as an addictive substance for two reasons:
1. Eating even a small amount creates a desire for more.
2. Suddenly quitting causes withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, mood swings, cravings and fatigue.
Today, sugar is found in many of the usual suspects, like cakes, cookies and candy. But you will also find it in canned vegetables, baby food, cereals, peanut butter, bread and tomato sauce. It is often disguised in fancy language, labeled as corn syrup, dextrose, maltose, glucose or fructose. Even some so-called healthy foods contain sugar.
Here are some examples:
-
A candy bar with 24g of sugar is equal to
6 cubes of sugar. -
An 8.3oz can of an energy drink with 27g of sugar is equal to
7 cubes of sugar. -
One pint of vanilla ice cream with 84g of sugar is equal to
21 cubes of sugar. -
A liter of soda with 124g of sugar is equal to
31 cubes of sugar. -
2 pancakes with 1/4 cup syrup is equal to
9 cubes of sugar. -
A single cookies with 18g of sugar is equal to
4.5 cubes of sugar. -
A lemon poppy seed Clif Bar has 21 g of sugar equal to
5 teaspoons. compare that to a chocolate-glazed donut from Dunkin Donuts, which has 14 grams of sugar, or
3 teaspoons. -
A 16 oz. Starbucks Frappuccino contains 44 grams of sugar, or
10 teaspoons.

"Over consumption of refined sweets and added sugars found in everyday foods has led to an explosion of hypoglycemia and type 2 diabetes."
Bill Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, was apparently hypoglycemic and became increasingly interested in the relationship between hypoglycemia and alcoholism. In 1968 he pleaded with physicians in a 48 page, 8 1/2 x 11" booklet to adopt the hypoglycemia diet and vitamins, especially B3, in the treatment of alcoholism.

In the 1940's, Dr. John Tintera rediscovered the vital importance of the endocrine system, especially the adrenal glands, in "pathological mentation" or "brain boggling".
In 200 cases under treatment for hypoadrenocorticism ( the lack of adequate adrenal cortical hormone production or imbalance among these hormones), he discovered that the chief complaints of his patients were often similar to those found in persons whose systems were unable to handle sugar: fatigue, nervousness, depression, apprehension, craving for sweets, inablilty to handle alcohol, inability to concentrate, allergies and low blood pressure.
In almost all discussions on drug addiction, alcoholism and schizophrenia, it is claimed that there is no one definite constitutional type that falls prey to these afflictions. Dr. Tintera reports that one type of endocrine individual is involved in the majority of these cases: the hypoadrenocortic.
Tintera published several epochal medical papers. Over and over, he emphasized that improvement, alleviation, palliation or cure was "dependent upon the restoration of the normal function of the total organism." His first prescribed item of treatment was diet. He said the importance of diet could not be overemphasized. He laid out a sweeping permanent injunction against sugar in all forms and guises.

The following is from an article entitled "When is a Food a Food and When a Poison." - Michigan Organic News, March 1957.
"In 1957, Dr. William Coda Martin tried to answer the question: When is a food a food and when is it a poison? His working definition of a "poison" was "Medically; any substance applied to the body, ingested or developed within the body, which causes or may cause disease. Physically, any substance which inhibits the activity of a catalyst which is a minor substance, chemical or enzyme that activates a reaction." Dr. Martin classified refined sugar as a poison "because it has been depleted of its life forces, vitamins and minerals. What is left consists of pure, refined carbohydrates."
"Refined sugar is lethal when ingested by humans because it provides only that which nutritionists describe as "empty" or "naked" calories., It lacks the natural minerals which are present in the sugar beet or cane. In addition, sugar is worse than nothing because it drains and leaches the body of precious vitamins through the demand its digestion, detoxification and elimination make upon one's entire system."

"Life in all its fullness is mother nature obeyed."
Weston A. Price
"Dr Weston A Price and his wife traveled to 14 different countries in search of healthy people. In his investigation of some of the most remote areas in the world, he found groups of people that ate only indigenous foods. He observed them to have perfect dental arches, minimal tooth decay, high immunity to tuberculosis and overall excellent health. He also found that when these people were introduced to modernized foods, such as white flour, white sugar, refined vegetable oils and canned goods, signs of degeneration quickly became quite evident. Dental caries, deformed jaw structures, crooked teeth, arthritis and a low immunity to tuberculosis became rampant among them. "

"Dr. Weston A. Price's legacy to mankind lives on in the Price-Pottinger Nutrition Foundation (formerly known as Weston A Price Memorial Foundation.) The Foundation provides both health professionals and the public with information on such diverse topics as traditional whole foods and their preparation, soil improvement, natural farming, pure water, nontoxic dentistry and holistic therapies in order to conquer disease and prevent birth defects, thus enabling people to achieve excellent health and log life into future centuries."

In her book, The Diet Cure, Julia Ross says the following:" It is obvious to the food industry that so many people crave wheat products, milk products and sugar, so not surprising the three can be found everywhere. These three allergy-addictors have a unique effect on your brain that can make them impossible to resist. As with alcohol and drugs, the first taste can lead to trouble every time - if you are sensitive to these foods. We know the body tries to calm irritation caused by allergy foods by releasing powerful, soothing chemicals. Candy bars loaded with sugar, ice cream made from milk and grain based foods like bagels can set off powerful drug reactions in your brain. Over time, these pleasurable brain chemicals can become heavily addicting. In fact, going without one or more of these three allergy foods could put you into a state of unbearable withdrawal."

A Natural News article Sept. 2013 by Jonathan Benson stated:
Sugar named the "most addictive and dangerous substance" of our time, worse than cigarettes and alcohol.
The head of Amsterdam health service in the Netherlands is trying to raise awareness about a pervasive global health threat: sugar. According to Paul Van der Velpen sugar is the most dangerous and addictive substance of modern times, and people need to be made aware of the many harms caused by this ubiquitous drug. Bravely defying processed food industry claims, which insist that sugar consumed "in moderation" is just fine, Van der Velpen delves into the actual science behind how the body responds to sugar as opposed to protein and fat. Van der Velpen explains that sugar intensifies food cravings, for instance, and causes people to eat far more than they otherwise would without it. Additionally. he points out that sugar also disrupts normal food metabolism, eventually leading to addiction.
He goes on to say:" Just like alcohol and tobacco, sugar is actually a drug. This may seem exaggerated but sugar is the most dangerous drug of the times and can still be easily acquired everywhere."

An excerpt from the article The Bitter Truth About Sugar
Dr. Mercola Newsletter, December 31 2014
Take Control of Your Health to Avoid Becoming a Statistic
Research coming out of some of America's most respected institutions now confirms that sugar is a primary dietary factor driving chronic disease development. So far, scientific studies have linked excessive fructose consumption to about 78 different diseases and health problems, including heart disease and cancer. Dr. Robert Lustig, a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of Endocrinology at UC San Francisco, has been on the forefront of the movement to educate people about the health hazards of sugar and fructose in particular, for a number of years now.
According to Dr. Lustig, we "abdicated rational nutrition when we went to processed foods. The low-fat craze has been particularly harmful, because when the food industry removed the fat, they had to put lots of sugar in. Without either fat or sugar, the food is unpalatable and no one would buy it."
We now know that good nutrition includes healthy fat, and quite a bit of it, and that sugar is a primary driver of chronic inflammation and related health problems, including obesity, diabetes, and heart disease and cancer.
In short, by removing fat and adding sugar, the processed food industry has created a smorgasbord of made-to-order disease. Besides enormous amounts of sugar, processed foods are also loaded with ingredients that have been banned in other countries, such as trans fats, artificial sweeteners, genetically engineered ingredients, and glyphosate.
Sugar-Cancer Connection Revisited
Hospitals are notoriously ignorant of the metabolic damage associated with sugar and processed foods. Even cancer hospitals serve up processed high-carb diets to their patients, despite the fact that the science quite clearly shows that sugar feeds cancer.
Cancer cells need glucose to thrive, and carbohydrates turn into glucose in your body. In order to starve the cancer cells, you have to eliminate its primary food source, i.e. the sugars, which include all non-vegetable carbohydrates. Otto Warburg actually received a Nobel Prize back in 1934 for his research on cancer cell physiology, which clearly demonstrated cancer cells require more sugar to thrive. Unfortunately, very few oncologists appreciate or apply this knowledge today.
