Good News From Our Mission Church

The Metro-East Mission Church has a new home! As of Sunday, February 2, 2014 we will be gathering for Mass (and have office space) at Trinity UCC (United Church of Christ), 47 North Douglas Avenue, Belleville, IL 62220.

Mass is still at 9:00 a.m. and we're maintaining the every-other-week schedule. Upcoming dates are February 2 and 16; March 2, 16, 30; April 13 and 27. Kay Schmitt is happy to give rides if people would like, and since the church is only about 1/2 mile from the Belleville Metrolink station, John and Ginny Dahlberg can pick up visitors there and get them back later. We're very excited about this move, and ask that the community continue to keep us in prayer for new life and growth.

Communal Work of Service

KIVA

On Saturday February 1, 2014 at 3:15 pm we will meet in the Fireside Room to extend loans using the remainder of the community KIVA donations collected over the past 6 months.  Anyone who is interested is welcome. The KIVA web page will be projected onto a screen.  We will actually log into the website and view the loan candidates, deciding together and completing the loans at the same time. Those planning to attend are asked to preview the KIVA website, if possible, and come with a few candidates in mind.  This will speed the process since our hope is to complete about 17 loans.

~~~~~
We want to share the story of the last of our ten loan recipients from the first gathering. This borrower is unique.  It is a group of women in Guatemala called Trust Bank, Mujeres Las Estrellas (The Stars Women).
They are eight enthusiastic and empowered women who run businesses that revolve around agriculture and textiles in a lush village in a rural area in Guatemala. A year ago they requested their first loan and have completed repayment. They again asked for funds through KIVA for a new loan.  The group originated three years ago when one member began a loan and training through a local Guatemalan micro-credit organization.
The women receive training in business administration, money management, women's health, children's rights, and health, among other issues. They borrow as a group, forming Trust Banks (groups of 7-25 women who serve as co-guarantors of the loan and act as a self-regulating support network).
Mujeres Las Estrellas Group's request for a $5,925 loan was fully funded through 203 participating lenders. We loaned them $100. Currently the loan is 16% repaid.
We hope you will come this Saturday to participate in this gratifying experience. If you have any questions or want further information, please contact Clarence Heller (636.256.6516, marclar123@aol.com).
Do You Have Clare & Francis Photos?
We are updating our website and we need updated photos of SCF people and events.  Did you take some good pictures at an SCF event that you would like to share?  If so, could you please send them to our administrative assistant, Laura Tiffin, at churchoffice@stsclareandfrancis.org.  If there are several photos from one event (e.g., Father Dickson's Cemetery or an SCF BBQ) please indicate that so we can organize them into "albums."  Thanks.
Running in the rain
A little girl had been at the store, shopping with her Mom. She must have been 6 years old, this beautiful red haired, freckle faced image of innocence.
It was pouring outside. The kind of rain that gushes over the top of rain gutters, so much in a hurry to hit the earth it has no time to flow down the spout. We all stood there, under the awning, just inside the door of the store.
We waited, some patiently, others irritated because nature messed up their hurried day.
I am always mesmerized by rainfall. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world. Memories of running, splashing so carefree as a child came pouring in as a welcome reprieve from the worries of my day.
Her little voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance we were all caught in, "Mom let's run through the rain," She said.
"What?" Mom asked.
"Let's run through the rain!" She repeated.
"No, honey. We'll wait until it slows down a bit," Mom replied.
This young child waited a minute and repeated: "Mom, let's run through the rain."
"We'll get soaked if we do," Mom said.
"No, we won't, Mom. That's not what you said this morning," the young girl said as she tugged at her Mom's arm.
"This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain and not get wet?"
"Don't you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about his cancer, you said, 'If God can get us through this, He can get us through anything!'"
The entire crowd stopped dead silent.. I swear you couldn't hear anything but the rain... We all stood silently. No one left. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.
Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation in a young child's life. A time when innocent trust can be nurtured so that it will bloom into faith.
"Honey, you are absolutely right. Let's run through the rain. If God lets us get wet, well maybe we just need washing," Mom said.
Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they darted past the cars and yes, through the puddles. They got soaked.
They were followed by a few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their cars. And yes, I did. I ran. I got wet. I needed washing.
Circumstances or people can take away your material possessions, they can take away your money, and they can take away your health. But no one can ever take away your precious memories...So, don't forget to make time and take the opportunities to make memories every day.
