All Souls Day

Saturday, November 2, 2013

The Catholic faith celebrates that we are in communion with all who have gone before us.  On Saturday, November 2 we will celebrate All Souls Day, remembering and inviting our beloved departed to be present with us during our liturgy.  Prior to Mass, at 4:00 pm, Frank will gather with anyone who would like to share stories and memories of someone who has passed.  During Mass, all are invited to bring pictures of loved ones to be presented at the altar during our Offertory.  In this ritual way, and in our prayers, we will pray with those who dwell on the other side of the thin veil we call life.  Please join us!

"In the twelfth century, the Jewish philosopher Maimonides outlined his insights into the development of generosity of a person.  He said that the lowest level of generosity was giving to another unwillingly.  The second level was giving to another willingly, but less than what one could give. The third level of generosity was giving only after being asked.  The fourth level was giving without being asked.  The fifth level of generosity was giving to a recipient one does not know, but who knows the giver.  The sixth level was giving to a recipient that the giver knows, but who does not know the giver.  Maimonides regarded the highest levels of giving as giving in situations when neither party knows the other, and when it moves the receiver toward self-reliance so that she or he no longer needs to rely on the charity of another."  (from Redeeming Administration by Ann M. Garrido)

On November 9 at 3:15 pm in the Fireside Room we will join as a community to extend loans to people we do not know and who do not know us.  Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in choosing loan recipients at this meeting.

A young couple moves into a new neighborhood. The next morning while they are eating breakfast, the young woman sees her neighbor hanging the wash outside. "That laundry is not very clean; she doesn't know how to wash correctly. Perhaps she needs better laundry soap." Her husband looks on, remaining silent. Every time her neighbor hangs her wash to dry, the young woman makes the same comments. A month later, the woman is surprised to see a nice clean wash on the line and says to her husband: "Look, she's finally learned how to wash correctly. I wonder who taught her this? " The husband replies, "I got up early this morning and cleaned our windows." And so it is with life... What we see when watching others depends on the clarity of the window through which we look.
