Our national network of communities, the Ecumenical Catholic Communion, is celebrating our 10th Anniversary this year in September.  To mark the occasion, Frank is going to present a convocation (open to the public) on "The Roots And Vision Of The ECC."  In this context he will share key insights that he gleaned in The Netherlands this summer while studying theology at the University of Utrecht.  Ours is a dynamic vision of alternative Catholicism.  Come and hear about the wider movement that we are a part of.  Mark your calendars now!

Book Club New Jim Crow

Monday, September 23, 2013

7:00 pm

We'll be covering Chapters 4 & 5. You are welcome to join us for interesting discussion, whether or not you have read the book.

What we've been talking about from The New Jim Crow:

"Approximately a half-million people are in prison or jail for a drug offense today, compared to an estimated 41,100 in 1980 - an increase of 1,100 percent. Drug arrests have tripled since 1980. As a result, more than 31 million people have been arrested for drug offenses since the drug war began. To put the matter in perspective, consider this: there are more people in prisons and jails today just for drug offenses than were incarcerated for all reasons in 1980. Nothing has contributed more to the systematic mass incarceration of people of color in the United States than the War on Drugs."
Recycling Electronics

Dear Sisters and Brothers --

Cleaning out some stuff, I discovered a whole bag of old phones, cords, plugs, etc.  As I considered making space in the closet, it occurred to me that I could offer this for recycling, even though it's of no worth to me.  Here is  a link to WITS, the answer to my problem!   www.witsinc.org

At Sts. Clare & Francis, the used battery recycling mini-project has worked well.  SO NOW, I'm bringing a slightly larger box for small electronic or technical refuse.  If you, too have stuff like this, bring it along to church, and deposit it in one of the two cardboard recycling boxes.  (We're still doing batteries!)  But PLEASE:  Nothing larger or heavier than an old-fashioned video camera.  This maturing person can't manage large or heavy items.

IT MUST FIT IN THE BOX!

I will accumulate this small stuff and get it to a WITS location.  The Earth thanks you.

Community Retreat
Given by Spiritus Christi

Saturday, September 28, 2013

9:00 am - 4:30 pm

On Saturday, September 28th, a team from Spiritus Christi parish in Rochester, NY will offer us an all-day retreat.  The Communal Work of Service committee specifically invited Spiritus Christi because of their many years of service in two particular areas: serving the post-incarcerated population and establishing a permanent mission in Haiti.  Members of Sts. Clare & Francis have expressed an interest in both.

This is an opportunity to learn from and be inspired by experts who happen to be full of faith and love.  We'll begin the day at 9:00 am and end at 4:30 pm in time for a break before mass together at 5:00 pm.  If you plan to attend, kindly register with Clarence Heller (marclar123@aol.com or 636.256.6515) to facilitate preparations. There is no registration fee, however participants will be invited to share a portion of the costs as they are able.

Sunday October 13, 2013

10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Sappington Historic House Complex

845 South Sappington Road

Parking available for Grant's Trail or the House Complex

We are doing this:

1) to pay tribute and celebrate the spirit and determination of our

               fellow African Americans

How? Developed walking tour featuring biographies of black                    Americans from every generation.

2) To expose youth (especially at-risk black youth) to the contribution

              of African Americans

How?  Invited students of Webster high school Peabody teacher of        the year, Julie Burchett, to help with the tour.

Invited north city youth from Angel Baked cookies to hand out

their cookies at end of tour (please engage them, this is part of

              the Angel Baked mission)

  3) To partner with a black organization, win their trust, learn from

their experience and hopefully, build from there.

How? By helping Ernest Jordan and the board of Friends of

               Fr. Dickson, all black Americans.

4) to learn from history and try to connect with present issues

How?  By gently introducing the mass incarceration issue into

our tour, citing Michelle Alexander's book, The New Jim Crow,

               raising awareness in the community.

To the whole SCF community: Thank you for all the contributions of time, money and prayers that have made this communal work happen and have made it so much fun!

African-American of Endurance:

Madam C. J. Walker

1887-1919

The daughter of former slaves, Madam C.J. Walker, was born Sarah Breedlove in Louisiana.  Her elder siblings were born slaves; Sarah was the first of her family to be born into freedom. She was orphaned at age 7.  By 14, she married to escape the brutality of her brother-in-law.  She had only one child, a daughter.

After her husband died, she moved to St. Louis to join her four brothers, who had become barbers. There she developed a scalp condition which prompted her to explore commercial and homemade products.  She married Charles Joseph Walker, changed her name to Madam, and began marketing Madam Walker's Wonderful Hair Grower, which she said was revealed to her in a dream.  For a year and a half, she and Charles sold products door-to-door in the South.  She moved to Indianapolis and built a factory and school to train black saleswomen. These women became known as "Walker Agents" and built their ranks to 15,000.

Madam empowered these young black women by supporting their educational advancement.  Through her own achievement, she became the first female millionaire in the country.  She moved to New York and continued her philanthropic and civil rights activism work there. Two years before her death, she held one of the first national meetings for business women in the country.  She died in 1919 at the age of 51 and is buried in New York, although there is a memorial to her in Fr. Dickson Cemetery.  On her death, two-thirds of her fortune was donated to black charities.  Her business continues to this day and can be found on the web.
