The Roots and Vision of the ECC

Presented by Frank Krebs

September 21, 2013

3:00 PM

at Sts. Clare & Francis

204 East Lockwood, Webster Groves, MO 63104

Our national network of communities, the Ecumenical Catholic Communion, is celebrating our 10th Anniversary this year in September.  To mark the occasion, Frank is going to present a convocation (open to the public) on "The Roots And Vision Of The ECC."  In this context he will share key insights that he gleaned in The Netherlands this summer while studying theology at the University of Utrecht.  Ours is a dynamic vision of alternative Catholicism.  Come and hear about the wider movement that we are a part of.  Mark your calendars now!
ECC Celebrates 10 Years ECC Logo

Ten years ago, in September of 2003, representatives of eleven independent Catholic communities of faith gathered for a constitutional convocation at Saint Matthew Church in Orange, California. The convocation was called to consider a proposed constitution as a means of entering into a formal covenantal relationship with one another, and as a means through which this relationship would be  governed into the future .

After vigorous discussion and debate it was moved that those representatives present, being duly authorized by their respective faith communities, vote to ratify the constitution. A unanimous vote followed.

All representatives then present signed the constitution on September 19, 2003, and the constitution became the governing document of our new ecclesial organization. And, so, the Ecumenical Catholic Communion was born.

Since that time our communion has grown from those original eleven faith

communities from six states and one territory of the USA to include more than fifty communities from 14 states and one territory in the USA as well as from the Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, Lithuania, and Austria. Even now there are several additional communities throughout the USA, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa who are expressing a desire to join the Ecumenical Catholic Communion.

Things we've been learning from The New Jim Crow:

"In two short decades, between 1980 and 2000, the number of people incarcerated in our nation's prisons and jails soared from roughly 300,000 to more than 2 million. By the end of 2007, more than 7 million Americans - or one in every 31 adults - were behind bars, on probation, or on parole."

Community Retreat
Given by Spiritus Christi

Saturday, September 28, 2013

9:00 am - 4:30 pm

On Saturday, September 28th, a team from Spiritus Christi parish in Rochester, NY will offer us an all-day retreat.  The Communal Work of Service committee specifically invited Spiritus Christi because of their many years of service in two particular areas: serving the post-incarcerated population and establishing a permanent mission in Haiti.  Members of Sts. Clare & Francis have expressed an interest in both.  This is an opportunity to learn from and be inspired by experts who happen to be full of faith and love.  We'll begin the day at 9:00 am and end at 4:30 PM in time for a break before mass together at 5:00 pm.  More info to follow, but you may want to mark your calendars now.

Your Christian Life

Do any of these comments sound like you?

Where can I learn the basics?

What if I wanted to join "this" (what's going on at SCF) but have no idea where to start?

What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus, twenty-one centuries after the fact?

I grew up Catholic but want to sort through and decide what to keep, what to pitch, and what to store because I don't know what to do with it right now!

In a mature church like we are growing to become, there is always a rich program for people like you.  The ancient name for this program is the "catechumenate," which means roughly, a place of learning.

Between September and May we will be offering different phases of such a program.  So whether you are thinking of being baptized or confirmed or whether you are a seeker, looking for a deeper understanding of it all, we have a series of programs that may be right for you.  The first phase begins next month.

Phase One is traditionally called The Pre-Catechumenate.  Our Phase One theme this year will be "Finding Language for Our Lives."  So our starting point is finding the meaning of key words or concepts, which might help us understand our own lives.  This is vocabulary-building for the seeker: journey...doubt/trust...a people...call/response...creative/chaotic... hidden/revealed...and more.  We'll explore these key frames for our lives by taking a sightseeing tour through ancient texts that have stayed around for a reason.

We'll meet roughly six times between September and November for Phase One.  Let me know soon if you're interested in the catechumenate and if Sunday or Saturday afternoon would be better for you.  We'd love to have you join us.

Thanks,

Frank

Charles Cutts 1923-1951

Charles Cutts (also named as Charles Cotton) was born August 24, 1923 in Kirkwood, Missouri .  In 1949 Mr. Cutts enlisted in the army and was assigned to Company A, 376th Engineer Construction Battalion, achieving the rank of Private First Class.  The 24th Infantry Regiment was organized in 1869. All of the enlisted soldiers were black. In 1948, the U.S. armed forces desegregated by Executive Order, however the 24th Infantry continued to be predominately African American. The 24th deployed to Korea shortly after the Korean War broke out in June, 1950. On May 10, 1951, Private Cutts died a "non-hostile death" aboard the naval hospital ship USS HAVEN (AH-12).  He was awarded the Korean Service Medal, The United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.  Charles Cutts left behind a wife, Mamie Myles Cutts and a young daughter named Violet.

Community Corner

The daughter of good friends of Karen Diehl has received two life-saving bone marrow transplants. They sent the following message to their family and friends:

Our Jill is now healthy and is part of our lives each day because of her donor and the "Be The Match" organization.  Now, it is our hope to give something back!

Be the Match We have signed up to lead a team for Be The Match® Walk+Run. Be The Match matches volunteer marrow donors with patients who have blood cancer, like leukemia or lymphoma, or as with Jill, aplastic anemia. These patients need a marrow transplant, and like most of us, won't have a donor match in their family. The cure for blood cancer and bone marrow disease is in the hands of ordinary people like us. Join me in transplanting hope.

By raising funds for the Be The Match Walk+Run, every step we take will make a difference.

Our family is passionate about the mission of Be The Match and we are hoping you'll help us support their work. A marrow match can happen at any moment, between any two people and we are trying to help those who need it most.

Join our team - Jill's Lifesavers

We are so excited to be a part of this experience - and hope you'll join us on this journey.  Click here to get started!  Thanks!

Sincerely,

Mary and Rick Davis

P.S. If you can't participate in the event this year, consider making a contribution to my page instead!  Your donation will help add new marrow donors to the registry, help patients with uninsured costs and fund research.

8:30 am - 5:00 pm

St. Mark's Episcopal Church

4714 Clifton Avenue
Cost is sliding scale $10-$25 and lunch is provided.

Justice and Peace Shares is offering a training that seeks to invigorate

and inform area organizers and possibly serve as a catalyst for organizations to continue with internal work as they seek to build organizations based on anti-oppression principles. The day will include exploring privilege and oppression. We are all the intersection of multiple identities, and exploring where we (and our organizations) have power or don't have power is an important part of justice work.
